i would like peoples opinions,
i can get my hands on a BA XR6 tyrbo manifold and was wondering is the spacing between the exhuast outlets the same as the EL's? i know the shape is diferent, and also where the bolts are is different. i was planning to cut off the flange from the BA manifold and weld on an EL flange so it will bolt to the head? will this work? any help or advice would be great. |

Hi there --- I would look very carefully at the two halves of the BBM and see if can put the BA top on the E series bottom before chopping them to hell and back.
I got sold a BA head gasket by mistake, and it fitted the EL block perfectly other than some of the oil and water holes would lead to big leaks... This would suggest the actual cylinders are in the same position.... |

Hi Fiend.. think he wants an exhaust manifold from a ba xr6 to fit.. not the bbm.

Ah s**t - I was wondering that just as I hit "SEND", but hey - I had typed it, so it was obviously beyond the realm of my ability to simply trash a whole message like that! Even though he did say "EXHAUST" or something, I simply refuse to bow to that kind of pressure and continued in time honoured Fiend tradition on my own bewildering path.
Wise man once say Message not contain BUMP is good message Anyways second half of message should have been helpful, the fact that the BA head gasket lined up perfectly on the EL block other than a couple of major oil or water leaks it would have created should suggest that the cylinders are in the same spot and that chopping some of the flange off and welding on other bits should work just fine. |

He *knows the shapes are different* and knows the stud pattern on the bolts is different... But he is not putting the EL onto the BA, but is putting the BA onto the E series. If he found a way of chopping the E series flanges to the BA pipework, then wouldn't that work? The circle part of the E series head will hit the circle part of the E series flange and then it's a matter of deciding if the oval BA pipe work will be able to be sealed with weld to the flanges. At the end of the day it's a lot of effort, and maybe should just look at another option...? |

Turbo manifolds for the SOHC 4L are pretty cheap these days - just go for that. If the cost of the turbo manifold is going to hold you back, I dare say that the rest of the project is also out of reach - this is just the beginning!

Snort have log manifolds for $600, might be a better option?

money isnt an issue, i was just asking as i thought it would be a fun project to work on, also the turbo manilfold and turbo from a BA i could get for $500 from a mate. i thought that was a decent price. i have some measureing to do, i just wanted to know if anyone has thought about doing this before and any tips. i need to fabricate a standard BA manifold with an EL flange and test that before i buy and cut up a turbo manifold. thanks for the feedback

Don't quote me but I could have sworn I read something years ago that it could be done.

When you fit the BA manifold to an E series 1 row of holes (top or bottom) will line up and the other side's holes will be on the wrong side of the port.
Its kind of hard to explain. The port spacing the same. You could use an adapter plate or weld more metal onto the BA flange so you can drill the other row of holes. Probably easier to make a log manifold with the correct flange though. |

Its been done before, someone made an adapter place on an AU.
buy the manifold/turbo for $500 keep the turbo, they normally sell for $800+ themselves. sell manifold and buy/get one made. you can pickup log manifolds 2nd hand pretty cheap.

Aftermarket Turbo manifolds may be cheaper, but how many aftermarket manifolds are made from cast iron? If you can make an adaptor plate to match up the the BA turbo manifold, that will be my first option, If not, then you got no choice but to go after market like a snort log manifold.
