ok.... im getting somewhere. If i leave it overnight then try to start it, it starts easy and idles rough but doesnt stall. It revs cleanly now...but after a few mins it develops its nasty idle again (stalls if i take my foot off the throttle), but if i maintain the idle with the throttle, its ok and it still revs cleanly...still have the stock fuel reg...Could it just be running really rich and fouling the plugs? Could it be a timing issue? Without a AFR guage im still just guessing bout it running rich, but its blowing plenty of fuelly black smoke... and this is all while sitting in park, if that matters?

ok definately sounds like its fouling the plugs

2 options

1 way too rich

2 timing way retarded

try setting the timing to stock + 2degrees and see if it idles and revs ok

btw ur plugs will need a realy gd clean by now
idealy get new set

A wideband AFR is nice to have, but its not going to help if you've got nothing to tune the engine with.

There are a couple of cheap twEECers floating around at the moment, I would spend the money on one of those before I worried about a wideband.

ok...ive read all the threads and i think i may have a tweecer on the way...but my problem is that im not sure bout what my base timing is?? On the balancer...looking from above you have a zero marker, then points to the left and points to the right. Now i know this is a real newbie question...but im thinking if the book says 30degress it should be on the 30 marker to the RIGHT of the zero?

if the writing is on the balancer itself, then you are correct.. if the numbers are on the timing cover, then you need to be to the left of zero

Just as a way of solving the idle while i await my tweecer...if i were to fit a 1:1 adj fuel reg and wind the fuel press down a bit...would that stop the car running overly rich on and slightly above idle? All i want to do with the car atm is move it around my yard and on/off my trailer (i dont have a winch)...would it work in stopping the plugs from fouling? Remember im not driving the car on the road yet, i just wanna solve the idle problem?
