Looking at around 1/3 of the way down on the turbo 103 section I can see what they are trying to say. But surge on load is much mopre dangerous.

this is from corky bells "Maximum boost" book
Compressor surge occurs when the throttle is slammed shut and air is caught between a pumping turbo and the throttle plate. this air blasts its way out the front of the turbo. when this happens, there is suddenly room for more air in the manifold, and air is pumped back in by the still-spinning turbo. the throttle is still closed, so the air again blasts it way back out through the turbo. this continues until the turbo loses enough speed for leak back around the compressor to dampen the air oscillations. compressor surge can also occur under boost if too much boost is present with low airflow through the system. the chirping sound heard from the turbo when lifting off the trottle while operating under boost results from this oscillating air volume. this noise is suppressed by the bypass valve.

mainly guys wont use a blow off valve on an automatic as it isnt really required as throttle is held constantly high through gear changes.
in a manual on the other hand when you let off the throttle to change gear a large pressure is built up in the intercooler and pipes which wants to go back into the turbo. This will cause the turbine to slow down so that when you get back on the throttle it takes longer for the turbo to spool up. Whereas a blow off valve will alleviate this pressure and will allow the turbo to spool up faster once you get back on the throttle.

bovs also stop joins on inter cooler pipes blowing of all the time.

what if the car has a air flow meter fitted before the turbo is there a way of still fitting a BOV without the AFM over fueling the engine when the BOV operates?? besides backfiring what issues would a BOV running with a AFM cause ?? Plumb it back in between the turbo and airflow meter and bobs your uncle, problem solved.

also i need to find out how to set up the timing using a electronic vacuum advance dissy

Wheres is the ISC taking its feed from? After turbo or before turbo?

no where at the moment i will be starting the turbo conversion on the weekend, where should i locate it ?

The most logical place would be bwteen the AFM and BOV as when the throttle is snapped shut the ISC will open to keep the car idling and this air should be metered properly.
I'm just going off the top of my head here. Best wait till Ebs 4L or EBXR8830 see this thread and make a comment. |
