I dont get it, John's EF is proof that it can be done...
He's also seen the cheap AIT kits I referred to... yet you all still doubt it can be done for under $2 grand? Just for an example, the AIT kit that sold for 1250 included: Air Research T3/T4 Turbo (oil/water fittings, braided waste-gate line, stainless steel heat-shield and brackets included) Cast split pulse manifold, waste-gate and actuator, 6 month old 3" dump pipe with the waste-gate exit plumbed back in. Intercooler, piping, joiners, clamps, bash plate, bumper to intercooler duct. Microfueler ECU (not functioning AFAIK), JAycar Digital Pulse Adjuster - KC5384 (no hand controller though) vacuum line included for the Microfueler and wiring included for both. Extra injector that bolt into the cooler pipe in front of the TB, OBX 12:1 rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Air box, King Dragon air filter, piping, joiners, clamps and all the mounts for the air box. |

For every cheap turbo set up that goes good there is 4 or 5 that don't.Just look at this forum and you'll see.
If you know the history or can get a good look at the 2nd hand stuff and it's all OK do it. Stuff with a warranty can stop all sorts of hassles. It may even come down to how much you know about cars and mechanical ability or even your geographical location.

So every 2nd hand turbo is a time bomb? Every 2nd hand kit is a time bomb? FFS they dont sell for much second hand because the s**t not that expensive to start with. ok ok. Potential time bomb. due to unknown history. |

every 2nd hand car is a potential time bomb.
so you do research and check it out before you buy. ofcourse it comes down to how much of a DIY'er you are.. i installed the stuff myself, so labour costs are negligable. as soon as you start paying the $60 per hour for a workshop there goes your budget.

thanks guys,
i am looking like having a budget of around $4000 for the initial build, i know i will spend more and improve it as time goes on, all labour will be done by myself so no problem there. i am looking closely at a snort stage 2 kit as a starting point, any opinions from people??? or by all means if someone has a set up for sale they consider to be a quality set up in my budget let me know. cheers Rob.

O/k 7k for AU 6 .. Now being upgraded with forged pistons and rods, turbo cam and springs..
With ARP studs through engine just under $4k on another engine.. My 5.4 Dart block turbo V8 about $25k all up including TKO600 gearbox and twin plate clutch, fuel lines etc.. Keep in mind an Iron Eagle Dart block is around $2700... The forged 6 and Dart block was built over time.. The TFS alloy heads and intake are from previous mods to 5.0 block..Which I still have in one piece!! Have to have another reason to work overtime .. Alittle moonlighting too.. Lol...

Personally i wouldn't do it if i had to pay a shop to do the work (apart from machining of course) its too expensive and i reckon....
Do it once, do it right, do it yourself. At least there is only one person to blame then if some thing did happen to go wrong, but then again you wouldn't have done it right, or done it once.
