Hi All,

Here's my situation: My I6 AU has a powerdyne with water injection, at 9psi. Previously, this has worked well, with the water injection doing just enough to keep things cool.

I recently upgraded to a new supercharger impeller, which is supposed to increase boost 2-3psi. It appears its done this, and has subsequently heated up the intake air. The water injection, despite an upgrade, can't cope with the extra heat. The tune, as a result, has to be super rich to stop detonation, and I've lost my top end (stops making power around 4900rpm).

So, I'm needing an intercooler to get air temps back down, so I can get it tuned more aggressively and restore the lost power. From my own research, and what i've had recommended, I need a water to air intercooler. There will be too much boost lost through an air/air, so I'm looking for a W2A with 3 inch inlets/outlets.

The kits at www.frozenboost.com have become too costly due to the $US to $AU exchange rate.

Does anyone know of where I can get good value kits, or even just cores, in Aus? Prices? Or, anyone selling a same side, 3inch inlet/outlet core/kit? I live in Brisbane.

Cheers for the suggestions.

Joe

Cheers, I spotted that one, but the core is too big. Looking for something around 12inch x 12 inch (300mm x 300mm).

If your ownly running 12ish PSI, then a liberty RS turbo intercooler would do the job.. I've just picked up one myself.. 90 bucks on ebay...

don't think you'll find much better than that..

you selling your water injection? :-)

Frankieh, I've been following your thread, which looks good. My problem with the RS intercooler is that i'm after 3inch inlet/outlet, and also from memory the RS core has an inlet or outlet underneath, and then it comes out the side? I'm looking for one which is same sided.

I'll see how I go with the intercooler + water injection once I've sourced and fitted the cooler. I'd like to see if I can get more out of the engine with leaner afr's using water injection. The setup is quite good now, and finally reliable. 180psi sureflow pump inside guard, water tank, fridge filter, solenoid, and high flow atomising nozzle with its own filter. Works great - very fine mist! I'll let you know if I don't need it anymore, but I'd like to try with both. Just got to find good value cores!

ARE in Brisbane do amazing water/air setups, with data to work out and guarantee what power increases can be expected, but they charge around 3K for a water/air setup! I'm hoping to find something the right size and quality a lot cheaper...

yeah.. I have a massive air to air here that was cheap as.. but water to air is always massively overpriced..

The inlet on the RS cooler is 3 inch I think, but the outlet is 2 inch. (you can get it to 2.5 by cutting it shorter as it sleeves down underneath.)

This worked out almost perfect for me a I'll be running it on it's side hidden in a modified EL or BA airbox with an external reservoir inside the guard up near the water washer.. still have to get to that point though..

The core size is 254 x 230 mm (10" x 9"), but overall, its 460 x 330 (18" x 13").

but it is a fairly thick unit at 115mm.

Got a quote from PWR on a 400HP barrel water to air kit, $1365. For another $50 they would fit 3" ends instead of the standard 2.5". Quote is several months old but gives an idea.

EBXR, I do run some meth through the water injection. Seems to sharpen up response a bit (prob due to higher octane rating), but engine still pings. Water is better for pulling heat out.

104ord, that core looks like the shape I'm after, though inlet/outlet angles look like the core would need to be oriented vertically. I'll pm you for more details.

Wagondad, I assume that PWR quote was just the kit, rather than fitted?

You can fit one of these but you still require pump, radiator and hoses..
http://www.pwr-performance.com/intercooler.htm

I have a feeling unless temps are way high??
There's other issues ?? Is compressor past it's efficiancy ?? have you logged the inlet temps??
In any case the inlet temp sensor and ECU should compensate by retarding spark etc...

EBXR, thanks for the pwr site.

Two experienced tuners worked on the car for 3 hrs, and couldn't get around the issue. Their take is that inlet temps are too high. The same setup, on the same map, tuned by the same tuner, used to work fine. It was only when I made the supercharger changes that the issues started.

I've ordered an temp probe, should arrive today. I'll fit that and log some temp differential, and let you know what I find. The guys are quite sure that an intercooler is what's needed though. Its making boost from 2500rpm, and ramping up to over 10psi, so it makes sense that compressed air would be getting fairly hot. Should be able to update on temps soon!

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Is yours from frozenboost opto? They've become very expensive with current exchange rate. Looks great.
