hi guys
im after some opinions on clutch brands and clutch types, a new problem has popped up with my turbo set up in my ed.. as some know, the car was dyno tuned on tuesday and unfortunatly the clutch is not up to scratch. it made 230rwkw @7.5psi but the major set beck with tuning it was the huge amounts of clutch slip.so it could not be pushed to its max power.. it currently has an au xr6 exedy h/d clutch and its no where near strong enough.. im considering maybe an exedy cushion button or ceramic button clutch for the std flywheel?? ive heard npc do good clutches? so i contacted them this morning and they can do me a modified 10.5" xr6t billet flywheel and h/d clutch to suit the cable set up in the ed for $880 or the same set up with a cushion button clutch for $1050. i think it sounds like a good price but im thinking there would be other brands out there.. im going to contact mal wood and see what options they can do but im pretty sure it will be more than npc.. ive even concidered auto but im sure the auto will not last long neither.. your thoughts???? |

i've never heard good things about exedy clutches.
i'd be tempted to try extreme, but i don't have a turbo 4L so theres a risk you'd be chucking money down the drain... i've just got a PBR GT/Sprint clutch in mine, so does "EL XR8" on here with similar power, but they would be way easier on the clutch then the turbo 4L in regards to how they make power. what NPC are suggesting sounds good, i'd lean towards that personally. the upgrade to 10.5" disc with the xr6t flywheel is a good idea. mal wood will do the same. i would stick with an organic plate though, just to keep some shockloading off the T5 with that amount of power.

yea thanks mate..
i just got a price for the au exedy h/d cushion button it was $500 and the ceramic button was $550. ive had a good run with the exedy clutches in n/a on the 4.0l compared to the pbr equivilant, but in all reallity these were just aftermarket replacements.. |

This will be Mal Woods pricing on clutches.
http://www.aceclutch.com.au/pdf/XD-AU_6 ... etails.pdf Here are the options. Much pricier than the ones you have been given. http://www.aceclutch.com.au/ford_au_e_i6/index.html My clutch was close to $1800. : / If I did it again I'd go a BTR for sure. Even a stock BTR with a big transcooler and turbotrana shift would last fine I reckon. |

i just got a quote from mal wood and im looking at around the $1500 mark for the 10.5" clutch, exchange bellhousing, flywheel, bolts, ect..
you know what? i have pretty much everything to convert it back to auto...the only thing thats turning me off the auto is that i would now have to add a s**t load of wiring to the car, as there is no possable way i could use the factory loom as it has been modified so much to accomidate the ems ecu.. and the fact that i think the auto wouldnt last long anyway, yet again i have the same issue with the brittle t5.... hmmmmmmm. |

I think its the best idea.
Or powerglide if you dont do highway kms. I would much prefer a good auto but do a bit of kms when I go dirtbike riding. |

Troy, I've got exactly this setup from NPC...a modified xr6t billet flywheel and h/d clutch. The old clutch died and some well respected Bris clutch guys (known for custom setups on BMW's etc), recommended and installed this. It ended up being only about $500 over a standard clutch. It feels good and has given me no probs at all, despite the engine now developing more power earlier. My car's supercharged @ 220rwkw, which as you know will be heaps more linear and easy on drivetrain than your new turbo. I can't say if the clutch is up to your turbo setup, but can certainly recommend it based on my experience. If it's made for an XR6T then it might go alright at your predicted power level (270rwkw)? The NPC stuff is quite good quality. Hope this helps in your decision, and that you can tune that thing to full potential! Looking forward to hearing what it makes.... Joe

Joe thanks joe. he did say the clutch is good for 280rwkw... did the bellhousing need any modifications, ect? and how stiff is the clutch pedal compared to std? the npc stuff does seem to be the best for the price... |

Troy, I don't think the bellhousing needed any modifications. The whole lot was $1700 fitted.
The clutch pedal is at least as good, if not lighter than standard (which for my car was standard AU XR6). I was surprised. I used to get this terrible shudder when engaging clutch (I guess because it was worn), and with new clutch it's totally smooth and easy to drive. Really improved my car actually! Joe

I would be surprised if you could get an Exedy 5 puck button clutch to slip, or the Extreme equivalent..
I have one in my EF which is a daily and its fine to drive - doesnt slip with 3rd gear clutch dumps in the dry (albeit N/A). |
