Hi All,
Has anyone used a copper headgasket with a turbo I6 before ? I have some questions : * I am running a head-shim (decomp plate - new comp is ~8.4:1) - should I : 1) Use a normal headgasket with the headshim and torque up head bolts to normal spec ? 2) Use an AU metal head gasket and torque up accordingly ? 3) Use 2 headgaskets - and if so, AU metal ones or 2 copper ?? 4) Use a single copper headgasket ? Bearing in mind, the instructions on my head shim say that I do not need to use 2 HG's...although I have heard through other people that when using a decomp plate / head shim, you should ALWAYS use 2 HG's...I've heard SO many different opinions...has anyone actually had any success with one or the other ? Dave (EASPRINT) - I'm sure you have had your bottom end rebuilt to suit lower comp - but even so with the type of power you're making with the T66...what kind of headgasket setup are you using ? how thick is the plate?
by the time you buy two SS ringed gaskets you could have almost had a custom thickness cu gasket cut. But then you would need O-ring block. My mate with a 12second cordia used a decomp plate with two std gaskets, always blew the stock pistons before damaging the gaskets. |

I was told the AU gasket will raise the comp...
Why do you want to reduce the comp ratio? |

Hi Chris,
Yes it will raise the compression a little due to being a thinner gasket - but if I run 2 of these metal ones - one in between the block and head ; the other in between the head shim and the head - then this may not make such a huge different to my already ~8.4:1 compression. Sorry, I should have mentioned that I have a turbo...hence why I want to run lower comp. I called a place today - and I'm leaning towards the 2 AU metal HG's at this stage...anyone know how much they are ? I'll call up and get a price on Monday...I want to get a move on with all this - too much downtime ! Thanks, Steve |

Plate is 1.5 mm gasgets would be around .030..Thats over 2mm all up...
Personally I'd use copper and "O" ring the HEAD..With sealant between each surface... If you know bore, stroke and piston deck this link will help working out comp..Remember to put - [minus] for piston dish, If any? http://www.rosspistons.com/calculator.php Talk to you local machinist most have done this before..With two head gasgets there can be leaks between two of them? In any case the surfaces NEED to be very smooth as steel and copper don't mould into rough machining like the old head gasgets....

Thanks for the insight Graeme...I'll make some enquiries and see what the go is...I realise there is more potential for failure with 2 HG's and a decomp plate / headshim...but on the other hand, I have heard of people having good success out of them on relatively tame boost (I am thinking 9 / 10 psi max once intercooled and all tuned) for a reliable daily driver - of course the temptation to do things later is a whole other story...but reliability / drivability is my main focus throughout the entirety of this project.

I'm thinking if your happy to keep it to 10psi, maybe just use a single copper gasket. 10psi is fine on a stock comp 6 so you should be fine

Dont you have to pull copper head gaskets out and anneal them on a regular basis?

I have never heard of anyone using copper for the long term and not have any leaks.
8.4:1 is nothing for an intercooled motor. I have heard of people O-ringing the head and using a std gasket. They get the ring cut right where the steel part of the gasket is so it bites into the strong part of the gasket. |

I'v had copper now for three years... Fel- pro's lasted six months!!! At $80 each...V8...

i had a triple layer steel gasket from jim mock for my 4 ltr.i have also heard from the owner of the 10 sec el he ran 28-30 psi and had no probs.
