seems a comon occurance normally induced by mechanical damage (dirt) then as you boost under the high speed's it gradually gets worse and flies to peices seding alloy into the cooler and then the engine! time to replace the cooler or at least wash it out and chek that the turbine wheel is fine and that the shaft is not bent!!!! |

far out.. is it really a design flaw or mechanical abuse or what?

Usually comes from using cheap pod filters.

damage like that usualy comes from a foreign object or having no bov or a bov that is far to small |

f**k, that looks just like the impeller i had. I should've taken a photo of the impeller of the S-Trim, after it sucked through a piece of the intake hose that had been rubbing. (Thanks CAPA!)
About 5 of the 8 blades of the impeller missing, no wonder my cooler had a bit of a rattle when i threw it in the bin! |

So just general dirt or bigger debris like bits of leaves and stuff?

Looks like something has got in there???
A non working bov imo wouldn't do this... The damage is on end of fins.... May get away with new comp wheel?

Yeah it definately looks like something has been sucked through, and the impeller has chewed itself on it. Hopefully the cooler has acted as a filter for the pieces of impeller that have gone MIA.

May get away with new comp wheel? ive seen a brand new IHI turbo fitted to a WRX for 5 days with a sticking BOV bent the blades back and brake some of them. After a full inspection from filter to the TB the only things found were bits of turbo. |

Plenty of factory turbo cars have been released without BOVs, and plenty of people have run modified turbo cars without BOV and they have never damaged the blades of the turbo.
