i've recently mounted an EL xr6 into my cortina, running straight gas.
i always had planned to turbo charge it, but my question to you is:

if the EL uses a knock sensor to automatically retard the timing to avoid detonation, does that mean that if a turbo is added, that no modification to the timing is required ?

i was originally running an X-series dizzy, but i've decided to go with the coil pack setup.
coil packs are somewhat unfamiliar to me, so if someone has some kinda info to offer - i'd appreciate that.

thanks guys.

I certainly wouldnt be trusting the knock sensor to automatically retard the timing. It will only retard when knocks are detected, and you dont want any knocking on boosted engines (i have seen how quick a knock can ruin a boosted engine).

If you want to run coil packs you will need to use an EF ignition setup. This involves replacing balancer and possibly the timing cover to for the crank angle pickup, replacing the engine loom, adding an EF ECU (EL's didnt use coil packs), and optionally replacing the dizzy with a sequencer. That or preferably get an aftermarket ecu.

The problem with going coil pack and stock ecu is that there is no way to retard the timing. At least with a dizzy you can restrict to total advance.

You could also look at getting a megajolt - a programmable ignition only ecu that works with the EF coil packs using an external EDIS6 module. Also very cheap way to go.

yeah, my bad... its an EF ignition setup, not EL.

that's what i was concerned about..

looks like i'll be going back to a dizzy then...
unless someone else has another avenue to offer..
