Just been doing some "research" at work and came across these: http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=0883
They are a type of wastegate/throttle plate type assembly that run off vacuum and run inline with your exhaust system. When the vaccuum is low the flap shuts blocking off a lot your exhaust gases creating back pressure and when on boost the flap opens all the way like a throttle body would making the exhaust free flowing. Has anybody seen these in use before or know how useful they are? My car was way too loud before with a 3 inch exhaust, single muffler and resonator. Im after a sleeper effect and would love to quieten it down a lot. Ive also seen similar products which redirect flow to the atmosphere on boost but I can only imagine the consequences when a cop finds it. Alternatively what is the best way to make an exhaust quiet without restricting power too much? Are more expensive mufflers better than cheaper ones at reducing noise levels while maintaining good flow? I have no idea what type of muffler my car has now. What are some good brands to look for? What are you using and is it very loud? I want to be as quiet as possible but still make good power. |

i have 3.5" dump, 3.5" cat and a single mandrel bent 3" system with one lukey muffler. its not really that loud but it not really quiet.
Brenden mock has a 3" dump, 3" cat and 3" system with 2 mufflers and a resinotor. but he is running sum stupid size turbine housing, i think it was a 1.75A/R single pulse t04z

I first saw these years ago on Autospeed or in Zoom..? Or both?
Can be setup to work on a NA car also. From memory there is a manual override so you can manually open the flap all the way at the flick of a switch. I'll try to find the article where they fitted one to a project car.

Just use as many straight through mufflers you can...Or do what car makers do.. Fit twin " exhaust in tail pipes... Ala WRX and most V6 engined cars...

i talked to the guy who invented those Actice Exhaust Controls for bout 50 min the other day, very help ful. he sent me a heap of info on them ill post it wen i get time, but there fairly exsspencive but. think bout $900 or sumthing!!

Get an Apexi EVC - Exhaust valve controller about $200, and for an extra $400 you can get an Apexi DECS - which electronically controls the flap and can be programmed for certain rev ranges.

The best way to reduce noise without restricting exhaust flow is by using the largest volume mufflers you can fit under the car. Both of the companies I worked for offered two styles of baffling in their mufflers: Absorption: Straight through with the baffle tubes wrapped in sound absorbing material like stainless steel wool or fibreglass matting. Mechanical, or reverse-flow baffling. This is where the exhaust gas is directed through a number of chambers. Contrary to poular myth, well designed reverse-flow baffling is not as restrictive as many would have you believe. Especially in the size-range that would interest most of us. When you buy mufflers, check that the size of the nipple (inlet and outlet tubes) match the interior size of the baffles. Many of the cheaper mufflers use the same core and simply change the nipples. I have seen three-inch mufflers that were barely two-inch in diameter through the core. When Genie offered complete systems for E-series Fords, the tubing was 2-1/2" OD. Testing proved that smaller or larger tube was counter productive to performance. Bare in mind that all testing was done on naturally aspirated, stock cars. |

corvette c6 uses this too i think. i have limited knowledge on it tho but i know it uses butterfly valves in the zorst so it restricts flow at lower revs

There is a turbo genie muffler on jay's car which i rekon makes it sound sick as!

I dont want my car to sound "sick as". Sick noises are for teenagers who dont know any better.
Thanks for the advice guys. Car should be on the road within in the next month so Ill experiment with different mufflers then. Cheers, Dan |

By sick as i meant nice quiet idle which opens up to an awesome growl as u hit the throttle. Dont call me a "teenager who doesnt know better." Just coz ur an old C*** who thinks he knows everything. d**k head
