They were buckets of s**t! They used a SU carb, for f**k sake! If they had used the EFI setup, they could have been a good thing.

hahaha wow XE turbo hater lol, they wernt that bad.

4.1 turbo had 530Nm and 190Kw, thats is heaps for 1983 car

Did you ever drive one? Or work on one? I like XE's, Ive had a couple, but the turbo setup on these cars sucked a***. We painted one that had been converted to EFI using all XF Fairmont Ghia stuff, made a much nicer car that actually started when you wanted it to!

Not so much unreliable, just untune-able. If anyone has had experiance with useless f**k s**t SU carbs, they will know what I mean. The one I drove, carbed, had soooo much lag you would start to back off coz it felt like something was wrong, then whooooosh away it went. Until the next gear, when it would drop off boost again. Very frustrating and unpredictable. Guzzled the fuel too. Once he changed it to EFI, it was a whole new car.

Even today in the wrong hands.

I remember reading an article about the AWD turbo XF years ago, but never seen pics of the gearbox or front diff. It was nice to have a look at it.

Cheers

The only people that think SUs are hard to tune are people that don't know what they are doing.

They are quite easy to tune. Time consuming to find the right needle but in no way is hard to do.
