Hi Fellas,
I'm wondering what air fuel ratios you guys run in your turbo or SC falcons? What afr's have you tuned to at wide open throttle, lean cruise, etc? I'm interested in tuning my engine better for a water injection system, and would like to know what are some common afr's to start with. Cheers, Joe

Around 12:1 is good.
12.5:1 a little lean but still safe. 11.5:1 a little rich but still ok. Thats at W.O.T.

i run 12.3 at WOT in my BA, its still plenty rich enough.
i wouldnt push it past 12.6-12.7, or less than 11.8... somewhere in the mid range is fine.

11.7 at wot and 15 Lb through peak torque, then 12.2 and more advance..
Cruise is 14.7.. This is measured pre cats with wide band on dump pipes...

Some of the Raptor dudes are going fairly rich at the top and throwing in a heap of advance to get good numbers.

Awesome, thanks for those responses. That's very helpful. I guess we've got a range from about 11.5:1 (rich) through to 12.7:1 (very lean).
I've recently made some engine/water injection changes on my setup, and now I'm down on power and it bogs at high revs. I suspect the engine is tuned with an overly rich high rpm afr, and then water is being injected on top of that. With water injection I think I should be tuning on the quite lean side, as the water/meth is substituted for fuel. I'll check this out and get re-tuned with this info. Cheers, Joe.

imo under full load any richer than 11.7 is silly and any leaner than 12.7 is silly
below 1bar i like to keep it around 12.5-12.7 above 1bar i like it around 12.0 - 12.4 tuning car overly rich to make them last longer is BS,

Thanks ebs and fritzz.
12:1 seems a good benchmark. I've communicated a lot of this info, plus some water injection research to the guys who tune my motec yesterday. They're well regarded and experienced, so I'm not sure why the tune seems so conservative. Hopefully they'll listen to what I've asked and produce a good tune - booked for last week of September. Water injection really only works if engine is tuned lean and timing advanced. If the tune is not suitable, I'll have to investigate taking the car elsewhere. Maybe chiptorque. Anyone know of other good motec tuners around Brisbane?

Tune the motec yourself with a wide band 02 sensor. Which model Motec do you have? It's not an expensive option to get wide band lambda enabled and the sensors aren't expensive either. makes for easy (and safe) road adjustments.

Waggin, its an m800. I would have no idea how to do that! Sounds good though...

JoeXR6, I've had some recommendations for this wideband setup, I have one with a gauge on the way. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Air-Fuel-Ratio-M ... m153.l1262
Although they sell an exhaust probe through their ebay store, I believe you get the best results using it in a bung in front of the cat. You could probably use your existing HEGO bung with the sensor connected to the Motec. I'm planning to use mine standalone so I'll be getting a 2nd bung installed.

MoTec has the ability to control a wideband sensor itself, you just need to get it enabled like Waggin said, so no need for a standalone controller.
All you'd need is the sensor.
