I'm vaguely aware of large overlap cams being not-so-suited to turbocharged motors, but what is the wisdom when picking a cam for a supercharged setup?
Does this same theory still apply?

no, you want to acheive as much exhaust flow as possible, speak to Phil from surecam, or kieth from wadecams.

Vortech,
"Cam selections are best discussed with various cam manufacturers. Many people select cams which are not the correct choice for centrifugal superchargers. When discussing the cam with a manufacturer make sure they understand a Turbo cam or a cam for a Roots style supercharger is different than a centrifugal supercharger cam. Generally speaking, the supercharger and the cam do the same thing (increase volumetric efficiency). Be cautious of choosing a cam that has large amounts of lift and duration. Ideally, for a street application retaining decent idle, emissions, and driveability are important. For these reasons, we suggest a "moderate" camshaft. Given the choice between two cams, we suggest the milder of the two for street applications." TTM, "A stock cam has a small amount of overlap, so at low rpm only a minor amount of air charge will be lost through the still open exhaust valve. A race cam with say 100deg overlap and the inlet and exhaust valve 0.3in open at TDC, will lose a large amount of air (boost) straight through the exhaust at low rpm. At high rpm, the situation is reversed. There is still leakage in the blower itself, but compared to the volume of air involved its minimal. During the valve overlap period, the pressure waves generated in the inlet and exhaust tract now restrict charge loss into the exhaust. Less loss means more boost – power." It would appear mild cams work well for a street application. I plan on running the stock cam then moving to something in similar spec to a dev 3 maybe. I also want to see what I can do with the 4.0 head. How much I can port it and how much bigger I can go with valves. |

I got a Crow Cams stage 3 custome turbo cam. My mechanic discussed all the aspects of the motor with them and they came up with a good one.
Wasn't too badly priced and produces some nice results including smooth idle.

Just remember that a turbo cam is way different to a blower cam, with a blower you don't have the high pre turbine exhaust pressure, most cams that work n/a will work with the blower.
Have you talked to Kieth or Phil yet? one call to either of them and you will be set, Kieth from wade has excellent prices also. Ignore the whole "stage _" terminology especially if you are comparing cams from different people, each cam manufacturer might have a massive difference even tho they are same "stage". |

Haven't started calling around yet.
Haven't got the blower yet either, just wanted some basic theory on it so I've got half an idea of what to look for. I've learnt that buying stuff you know nothing about isn't the best tactic! Cheers for the info so far guys, it's helped alot.

Agree with ltd351T a lot of success with na cams with blowen engines. i would still recommend Crow Cams, alot of people dismiss them but have alot of experience. never steered me wrong in 9 years. good luck nackers. hopefully u can smokem past the 1000 ft mark LOL. |
