Hey Guys, I need a little help, I have just purchased a 2003 BA XR6 Turbo Ute, and I have problems....
The motor surges between 1000rpm to 2500rpm, when driving both cold and hot, some days are worse than others and then other days it doesn't do it at all, now I have replaced the following: Coil Packs, Spark Plugs, fuel filter and the rubber hose attached to the throttle body as that had a big A#S split in it,so when I was replacing the hose I cleaned out the throttle body also, but it still surges,it got taken to Ford for the surging and Ford had the ute for a day and all they did was replaced the radiator as the trans cooler was split and said that they had cleared the fault codes and couldn't find anything else wrong with it....GURRRRR I have taken the Ute to a local garage and watched the guy plug his computer into the ute and he showed me that there was no codes coming up at all.... The only other things I think it could be are TPS, ECU or the inlet gasket, now does anyone else have any idea or am I bang on the money with what I think I need to replace? If so is there anyone that can help me out with replacement parts? Or that can recommend what else I can try.... Cheers Aaron |

What do you mean by surges? Does it do it under heavy throttle and/or light throttle? Any weird noises? More info please

Hey There, it doesn't happen under load, it does it around 40km's very badly revs go from 1000rmp up to 2500rpm and back down again and up and down etc, and eases off the faster you go, no noises just a rev counter going up and down (along with the engine). I hope you understand what I mean. To me it feels like a vac leek or a air flow problem, but I have been reading a lot of forums saying it could be TPS or ECU or inlet manifold gasket leeking, just thought of something, the best way to describe it is it's like your bunny hopping down the road not giving the car a steady flow of petrol, gees i'm even confusing myself now lol.....

This is what happened when it went to Ford:
But when it came back it was still doing the same thing, I got the trans recoed and the gear changes are 100% better now and it doesn't whine anymore and pop into netural whilst driving either, so I don't think the trans is the problem.... |

Might not help at all, but a few years back my mum's Hyandai (not a turbo obviously so might not apply to you) had an issue with surging, except that it was at idle. We would be sitting at the lights, and without touching the throttle, the revs would go straight up to around 5500-6000, then back down and repeat. Picture a bogan revving his VT at the lights, the same sound except with no throttle input.
I believe it turned out to be a mixture of things. The first thing I remember was when we took it in (the first of many times, bloody Korean piece of s**t), the clutch and basically everything around it had cooked itself. The mechanic's said that they had never seen anything like it, the clutch had practically melted. IIRC it turned out to be a mixture of transmission issues, and the throttle position sensor, and a few other little things. Basically the whole thing fell apart afterwards. Now THAT'S generous! By the sounds of it, you've pretty much taken the trans out of the equation, so it might suggest look into the TPS, but I'm no expert, let alone with BAs. EDIT: I found a thread {DESCRIPTION} that spoke about the TPS issue a little bit. Again I'm not sure if it relates to the surging that you're having, but it may be worth a shot.

Sorry also, do the BA XR6T have an air flow metre or a map sensor, if so would this cause the wrong air flow mixture if faulty, Then cause the car to surge?

Says here they didn't do A thing with the gears just serviced it and f**k around for a while, take it to a trans specialist They didn't even spell transmission correctly ffs
