I am undergoing a little project whereby, I am trying to get a supercharger kit together as cheap as possible.
My set up is going in an ED Fairmont Ghia with a 5.0l, using a Powerdyne blower. I have most of the parts either in my possession, or on their way. The only thing I need now is the mounting bracket. So now I have the option of both contacting CAPA, and paying through the A$$ for the bracket, or hopefully hunting down someone else with the dimensions, or indeed a template for a supercharger bracket to suit an e-series V8. Of course I could mock one up using MDF, and then get one cut, but I would like to get a head start on my project, and avoiding the R&D work. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, and I would even consider buying the information to avoid the greater cost of buying the bracket.

Problem is, as you know, there brackets are mostly set up for the right hand side, thus my predicament finding one set up for an Aussie V8. If I cant find one second hand, I will consider making one, but would rather not have to stuff around with mocking up a bunch of prototypes, until I get it right. So any info on the dimensions, or indeed a template would give me a huge head start.

If i was taking mine off anytime in the near future i'd measure it all up and start getting them manufactured.
If i have to for some reason, i'll let you know and send over some diagrams. Cause f**k paying $700 to get a piece of metal thats worth $30 off CAPA. |

Even the CAPA 'kits' are pricey, hence I'm doing my own kit and will compare my price when its done. Kinda to get a good kit at a reasonable price, and to prove how much it can be done for. Thanks for the offer. If I can get a half decent instruction on a universal bracket, I wouldnt mind posting it here, for all to use.

Yes my reasoning was to adapt the U.S style bracket to our side...Simply by welding pick up points on them....

$790 straight off CAPAs website
And the tensioning system is f**k laughable. 1/2 square cut into the bracket, and the bolt to tighten is right behind where the belt runs. CAPA have 'universal' brackets on there website ({DESCRIPTION} , scroll down to "Supercharger Bracket Kits") listed at $149. What these entail I dont know. Hey dave, gilmer kit from CAPA, only $1590 LOL.

Yeah i know, and the tight asses wont budge very much on prices for any of their kits, even at the Nats... as you know.
Haha $1,590 for a gilmer drive kit! Do you really think CAPA are going to get another cent of my hard earned... I wish i could the C*** out of business, or someone else around OZ could make up some other supercharger kits to the scale they do, and run CAPA out of this damn country. The sad thing is, it wouldn't be hard, because basically the majority of the stuff CAPA sells is s**t, (even if it is or isn't) it still costs a small fortune! The next person on here who get a bracket should get it copied before they install it, and then leave the design for people to use. I know if i ever do, i'll have the design made up, or copies of the bracket made up for anyone that wants to make up their own kit, then get all the measurements of the pulleys and a handful of bolts to suit them all. So all up for probably around the $300-$400 mark, people could have a bracket, and pulley setup for various Falcons. No more of this $1600 s**t that CAPA charge. |

I used to think like you but the price keeps the so called "unwanted element" from being blown. Their kits contain more than the brackets, there are the idler pulleys blow off valve, plumbing, additional fuel pump if necessary and the like. They have also spent money and time researching what brackets work and what belts suit and cover a wide range of vehicles, also the kits can undergo compliance and be legal on the road after inspection. They also import and service the blowers so they take alot of overheads on as risks, otherwise there would be no business to service some US Blower products they stock. If you really think that you can do better go and buy a kit on US ebay for a 5.0 V8 and see if it fits, take some risk also in getting a better price and get it into Australia then delivered to you safely. Trust me if you do you will learn that CAPA offer something which is better than nothing.

if someone can make up an autocad drawing of the bracket, id be able to make them pretty easily on the CNC profile cutter i run here at work.
The CAPA universal bracket is just a big square with one corner cut out and drilled for the supercharger

Well for starters (i won't start on this topic again guys i promise) the bracket for the blower doesnt fit properly in the engine bay for EL V8's anyway.
The rest of their kit is basically crap. #1 The blower head unit - can be bought from anywhere... buy them cheap from the US if you can. #2 The bracket, now that CAPA have got the bracket made up, (it is a very simple design) it doesn't cost $800 for a piece of metal like it is. #3 The pulleys are extremely easy to get made up, at 100's of places in Australia. #4 The 'so called' tensioner is a tiny piece of metal with a 1/2" drive cutout for a 1/2" breaker bar etc to put pressure on the tensioner plate. The tensioner pulley itself, is just a free spinning pulley (read #3). #5 The Rising rate reg can be p****d off for bigger injectors (either a new MAF is needed to be calibrated to suit the size of the injectors) or an aftermarket ECU is needed to control them. #6 Buy a new in tank replacement fuel pump for less than their in-line ones, then it is basically factory fitment. #7 Bolts, hmm there's about 5 allen key bolts for the blower head (not hard to get hold of) 4 bolts to secure the second crank pulley (extremely easy to get hold of) Another 3 to secure the bracket to the Power Steering pump bracket (which is not made of strong enough metal for the CAPA bracket to be using to tighten up against, as they snap very easily. (Yes they are meant to be tightened up fairly well) There is one long bolt to attach the blower bracket (again, not hard to source at all). A couple of little bolts to attach the tensioner (easy to get) #8 The intake hose for the blower. A 90mm flexible rubber hose for mount to the intake of the blower and run into the bumper bar with a filter on the end. Very easy to get hold of both. #9 Water injection, not necessarily needed, and intercooler can be setup. Either air-air, or air to water, etc. Or kits can be had from AUS or the US. #10 The oil feed and return lines, can be bought from Pirtek, or any places like that, for next to nothing. Thats basically al the in a CAPA kit. Now here's the run down of the prices these items can be had for. #1 Blower, can be had for anything from $500 to $4000 for brand new units. #2 The bracket can be made up for less than $50 (including the labour component. (Mate is getting his VS V8 one copied atm, and thats the price he's getting it done for). #3 The price for the pulleys of my mates VS V8 (albeit with 2 small pulleys less than the EL V8) came to less than $140. #4 The tensioner plate is worth about $10 from any metal fabrication place (been priced up as well) #5 Injectors to suit can cost between $300-$600 for brand new items. #6 New higher flowing Walbro fuel pumps are around the $170 mark. #7 Let's over quote the price of the bolts, and say they would be around the $30-$40 mark. #8 Intake hose costs about $30 from a variety of outlets. #9 Water Injection, kits can be bought from around $150-$200 from the US or AUS, or an air to air intercooler setup would cost around the $700 mark with pipework done by exhaust shop and brand new cooler. #10 The oil feed and return lines can and have been bought for less than $25. I did the kit on my car for about 7k, but thats with 2k worth of aftermarket ECU and tuning, a cooler and piping, new injectors, fuel pump, headunit for 2k - brand new, a couple of guages and pod mount and having to fork out $1,600 for a bracket and pulleys off CAPA... Yes of course they had R&D costs involved, but the prices they charge is also called extortionate. Imight have to pull my setup apart to: a) get it running properly b) help some guys on here build up their own kits for probably less than 4-5k all done... Not 8k for an inferior kit (i.e. water injection, instead of a cooler, inline fuel pump instead of an in tank one, plug in ECU instead of fully aftermarket and tuned one, new injectors instead of a Rising rate reg, etc...) Not having a go at you Opto, but CAPA are rip-off's and don't have the time of day for any customer of theirs. f**k me now my fingers are sore! |

Cheers for the awesome response guys.
Fordmods.com is the s**t! My kit currently includes: Powerdyne BD-11A head unit A few different blower pullies Crank Pulley on its way #42lbs injectors Calibrated Pro-Flow MAF Sensor MSD 6AL Bypass valve Oil separator, and belt tensioner. All purchased from either eBay, or coral.net. Not to mention I already have a Walbro in-tank pump, and Kirban AFPR. With a currently high Aussie dollar, free trade, and cheap freight (also labeled gift!), the cost will be well below a CAPA kit. It should also be under what a US purchased and shipped kit costs, and I will know exactly what I am getting. Though to be honest I haven't added up the cost so far (around AU$2050 without pump and AFPR), I have the feeling it will be significantly cheaper, and more comprehensive than buying a ready made kit. Also in QLD compliance is easier than other states. All I really need now is the blower bracket, the 8-rib belt (easily sourced), piping to and from the blower, a few bolts and hoses. And of course a good tune, which Chiptorque should be able to achieve. I might just see if I can purchase one off the coral forums from someone selling and willing to send it over, then adapt it to the left hand side, hoping there isn’t any 'major' modification to it. It might just take a while, as I get stuff sent over via surface (4-6 weeks), to cut down on costs. Not really in a hurry as I have the time, and the knowledge to do this without CAPA, but would like the whole project completed by the end of the year.
