got a head off a previous engine that had 2G spend on porting etc,and has 30 thou taken off the head now im going boost and wanting to know the best way to do this i know Cometic do de-comp gaskets for vl's but not sure about the 4L, and how thick will it have to be with a zero deck height block and dished pistons. cheers

if your running dished pistons you shouldnt have to decompress the head anymore, you need to work out what the compression ratio is with the head and pistons your using, you dont want to lower the comp more than it needs to..
in saying that im running a std au xr engine with 9.6:1 compression on 14psi boost... how much boost you wanting to put into it?? |

The wastegate is set for 9 psi at the moment but I wouldn't mind trying to get 260-280 rwkws out of it

thats some good figures there, mines 20thou over, ceramic and teflon coated hypertec pistons, full balanced bottom end with race series bearing, port and polish, bigger valves, stiffer springs, 977b cam which i will change, think it should make decent power?

It's talk and hearsay till you find some facts...
High compression can be run with boost BUT timing and TUNE is MUCH more critical... Many have run two AU head gaskets and have had no issues .. YES sounds bodgy but lets face it .. It's just extra layers of metal gasket... It increases the piston deck height.. On some larger bore engines this can promote detonation.. Doesn't seem to be an issue on these engines with it's better swirl through cylinder ports... Mild boost on a well sorted system should net 300 rwkw... With 42Lb injectors / 225 fuel pump etc...

this will be with a t3 turbo so not sure how much that will make

i made 300rwkw with a std comp EL motor. but its always going to be vulnerable to changes in temp etc causing detonation. a boosted 4l will always be happier at 8-1 than 9-1

You can get 1.3mm MLS headgaskets. They were on ebay, not sure if they still are.

I have a feeling ACL make a copper head gaskit for the SOHC I6 engines, could be worth looking into if you need to drop the comp a tad, after you have done the maths to work out what your comp currently is.
You can also fit water or water/alcohol injection to help fight off detonation if you need to. Otherwise I think ACL make a copper shim for the SOHC I6. Cheers ToranaGuy

i just run a ACL shim with a cheap fiber gasket either side, no issues
