Hey all
Been looking at turbo stuff for ages now and another issue ive been stuck with is that most of the turbo kits have high mounted turbo's. Has anyone had a high mounted turbo and had issues with melting break booster's, thrott cable, underbonnet paint ect...? and is there any advantage over a lower mounted turbo? thanks

Often thought this myself. Only lowmounted turbo conversion on an E-Series I've seen done is on fordforums.com (not .au). By a guy called turbotrana, he's there version of CHEF basically (DIY turbo ED)
The only reason I can see for a high mount is ease of plumbing I guess. Is that the reason it's more popular?

What? theres another version of me getting around? hehe yeah his is a much bigger turbo, a low is a good option as it would lower engbay temps a bit... but mine up high with a shield on doesnt heat up the bay much... low mount makes it harder to mount the wastegate though, its gotta sit up high

Dont panic too much though, Ive only melted throttle cables/cruise control cables that were directly over the exhaust housing.
I wrapped the dump pipe and wastegate pipes in thermo wrap and made up a stainless steel shield. I also put a metal tube over the throttle cable, wrapped it in thermo wrap and pulled it up next to the firewall so it no longer goes over the turbo... I just did a 3000 kay road trip and all was fine under the bonnet... heres a pic |

hmm, interesting
another thing ive been interested in is with the low mounted turbos, you can easly hide them under a heat sheild. Fool any stupid coppa that doesnt know what he is looking at " i swear officer, its just a big radiator"

The BA's turbo is pretty well hidden... but really, if the set up is tidy and factory looking ie everything isnt polished and hitting you in the eyeballs then you might get away with it... might

I've melted two brake boosters so far. First one and made a heat shield, then the second one went, made a bigger shield.. Its all good now, After driving for a fair while I can put my hand behind the heat shield and touch the brake lines coming out of the booster and their not very hot.
