Your right there tjb45, a tank full of dodgy fuel on a 45 deg day is alot different to when it was tuned on a cool winter day with the bonnet up on the dyno.
I'm reading and hearing about alot of guys with a few different tunes... like a hardcore on edge tune for the track, a low octane freeway tune ect. Yes, motor is 100% standard ED, 250ish thousand kays... doesnt burn oil, doesnt use oil, but is starting to sound a bit loose which I belive is more from it over reving when the auto was slipping. I am changing the cooler pipes to alloy, only to save some weight and so I can polish them and start tarting up the eng bay... soon as i have some time for it again... Engine plans... I'm going to rebuild this motor, but first I want to break it so that I know exactly what handles lots of boost and what doesnt... I'll give it as much boost as I can until the injectors max out, hopefully around 25psi. I'm not going to over rev it or abuse it, I'd just like to find its boost related weakness... rings for sure, but pistons, rods crank?? Only one way to know for sure |

So long as you don't end up with a piston or rod sticking out of your face
With regards to the knock sensor I was under the impression they used a pulsing signal rather than an analogue signal; ive only got the factory book here to suit an ea, so nothing on knock sensors... anyone with ef/l or an au book care to fill us in on knock sensor operation (in terms of outputs) |

they are piezo electric device, when vibrated at certain frequency they make their own voltage output, thats why most sensors have a single wire going to them, they generate the voltage internally... you know, like oven lighter things when you push the button they make a spark

I've also heard they are a piezo device, That’s why I thought it was strange that I got a steady 3 volts from it when the car is idling(also backed up by some technical documentation I've got). I would of assumed that it would generate a very small <1 volt signal when some form of knocking occurred.. The only thing I can think of is the signal is been modified somewhere before it get to the ECU (weird I know). I might try to measure the signal just out of the sensor and go from there.

correct, from memory it is less than 1 volt output when pinging, no output any other time...
if you were probing for it at the ecu you may have been on the wrong wire..?? ill check a genuine ef w/shop manual at work on monday, i work at a ford dealer

good q the trana, i had wondered that, i think he has a 75mm core, i have the 100mm core and it appears my whole pipes n all will be hanging out, to get one to fit, i rekn ud need the 75mm core and cut back the lower member and cut back the side panels going down alongside the condensor... ??

I took the bumper off and chucked it into the wheelie bin
Replaced it with a brock ea replica... I cut a fair chunk out of the centre but it covers the cooler and pipes nicely |

Seems to be a very popular mod these days... there's so many turbo parts around due to huge amount of turbo cars getting modifed now

I love reading this thread, it gives me inspiration to mod my EB, and if i had the $$ i'd turbo it. My turbo torana project is behind atm, blew the head gaskit on the ford, so there goes my turbo rebuild funds.
CHEF, will be interesting to see what you break. Judging by the BA turbo guys, i'd say rings, pistons, maybe rods. I'd be suprised if you broke the crank! Chers ToranaGuy

3 minutes - shouldn't take that long, "gone in sixty seconds" now that sounds like a better movie.
