You dont want the system working that hard all the time.. my pressure gets up around 72psi (from 43ish standard) at full boost but that's only for a few seconds at a time. I havent measured duty cycle but fair to assume it's 100% at full pelt. Think it's time for you to upgrade.... i thought so...

Just buy bigger injectors... you'll be suprised how cheap you can get them. My only fuel system mod is the 255lt walbro pump and injectors. Im not a fan of malpassi force fed injectors...
Dunno what power, will dyno soon. |

I noticed you had troubles with cylinders 3, 4 and 6. Which inlet manifold were you using?
I grafted an XR6 style dual runner manifold on my first turbo crossflow setup. When I blew the engine I stripped it and found cylinders 3 and 4 had been running lean and pinging and cylinder 6 showed signs of similar problems but not as severe. I built my own custom manifold with shorter runners (6 inch). The engine is heaps laggier but is more controllable when the power comes on because I don;t have a huge torque spike at 3500 rpm which tries to fry the tyres then drops off by 4800 rpm. The power comes on later but pulls for longer right through to the rev limit and feels like it wants to keep going even then. I'd be interested to see the results when you go custom inlet as I personally think it is one of the changes changes I ever made on my engine. |

so is the inlet manifold not good for forced air, what about the BA turbo inlet you think it would be better

South told me that the BA XR6T hasnt got the BBM running, all the butterflies ect arnt there.
Has anyone seen inside a BA intake mani?

Well with me not pulling one apart... and being drunk when i last saw one, they look about the same as pre BA BBM. *slaps ford* And top stuff with this rebuild too. Very interstiing Should be good

Has anyone seen inside a BA intake mani? Pretty dumb if htey dont. They could have fitted a ED style intake and reduced plumbing by nearly half

Gotta go backwards to go forwards eh? I don't think ford are too keen on using stuff first used in 1989 around 14 years later on a totaly new car.

i'll let you know how i go with it.
Does anyone know where i can get liquid extruding done, you knwo where they pump a viscous and gritty fluid through the runners to bore them out and smooth off any dags??? somewhere in dandenong or Melb?

Apparently the BA manifold is slightly different but mostly because the inlet port is a different shape on the twin cam head.
The BA manifold definately have the dual runner butterflis removed. This is because a 21 inch runner combined with boost means TOO MUCH torque too early for the engines to withstand let alone the rear tyres. That was one of my problems which lead to the pinging which broke my first engine. I played around with my engine in engine analyser and there way too many things coming into their sweet spots all around the 3000 - 3600 rpm mark. Turbo was really screaming up onto boost, cam was kicking in niceley and the longer runners were loving it all at the same time then my 4500 rpm the torque just fell over and max power was at around 4800 rpm. My maximum volumetric efficiency and torque were at 3600 rpm which is also around where the engine was pinging before it broke. My theory was that the turbo was going to come on boost around 3000 rpm no matter what I did so I decided to make the runners shorter and the cam bigger so they carry the top end power after the turbo reached full boost. This is a better situation than a lot of the dyno queens you see where the torque curve is the same shape as the boost curve and they basically start losing torque as soon as max boost is reached. From what I gather the bottom section of the manifold is fine but the plenum with the centre feed throttle body favours the middle two runners so give them more air, making them lean. If you look at all of the kits runnning around for the BA they all have modified plenums. The 1000 hp BA engine by Nizrpo still uses the BA bottom half of the manifold with their custom top plenum and front mount throttle body. Pretty impressive really. I called about one of those manifolds when I first saw them and they wanted about $1500 for the top bit alone so I made my own really basic design which is working sweet and cost me around $300. If you remove the butterflies from the Dual runners manifold the runners are around 13" long. If Nizpro build a custom manifold with decent diameter bellmouthed 6" - 8" runners then my calcs suggest they will gain another 100hp in the top end but sacrifice a bit of low down torque. |

soo... $600 hmm, thats alotta beer money! I got 6 new Bosch injectors that flow ~40% more than stock I6 ones - that equates to ~24lb - teamed with a second fuel pump inline, I noticed an instant smoothness and little pinging (well this is all before proper dyno tuning). Yes it makes a lot of difference - add fuel and pump and you're instantly ahead with the right hardware. Pump second hand $100 and injectors $200 (brand spankaz!). Cheers, Steve |
