For smaller power with a large engine like the four litres, theres no real point going to tuned length. You may as well use a log style, but if not, i think snorts do a equal length runner jobbie.

you realise you probably have gotten better, cheaper and easyer results just putting a 'J' pipe on the stock manifold. Not mention not problems with craking welds. still not great but at least ALL of the gas would be flowing the right way in the manifold. |

Yes, very true, if I was to do it again... Yeah, from the outside it does look like it would give a very uneven flow, but I me and the die grinder sorted that out. Its flowing around 250wkws, has being glowing red on the dyno and still hanging together. OK for a 50 buck manifold...

the AVO turbo EA's ran a similar cast manifold.

That's got my vote for quote of the year I've brought it up before, and I'll do it again, what sort of measurable gains are there from going to an equal length (misnamed as tuned) manifold over a well made log? It'd be interesting what gains (if any) you'd get if going to an equal length from your log style CHEF.

gains would prolly depend on the setup.
current power and would likely change the power curve.

Anyone got a pic of this J pipe on a stock manifold, just trying to work out how it could work without fouling. |

As an example, the xr6t manifold looks like the've just modded a standard one, thats where I got the idea to do mine.
I'd like to get a tuned length mani, but wont happen until this one is holding back power. If you were to sit it and a log style side by side, you would see it has longer runners and a large collector so it "should" flow better, as there is no sharp angles. But at the end of the day, it is a flow restriction and a smoother flowing set of pipes would be better... I would expect to see better top end breathing |

A well built log style will put you into 11's wasy !! What more do you want! Nice short runners close to turbo.. Just make sure bends into log are at 45 * and she'll flow enough to break any std trans...
These times where run with log style manifold... http://www.fordforums.com.au/member.php ... serid=2544 I'd say you'd be happy with that? Btw the power level Snort have possibly isn't lower due to exh manifold, I'd suggest other parts, tune etc...

Yes tuned length is just that, tuned for a specific motor/turbo combo. The majority of "tuned length" manifolds are really just equal length runners, the longest that will fit in the space.

Yeah, that's the point I was making.
What about timing of exhaust pulses to the turbine? Obviously not as important the more cylinders you have (less spacing between pulses), but with alot of the smaller capacity (4 cylinder) turbo motors, that sort of thinking would go into the better made manifolds wouldn't it?

Don't worry its big block compared to rice engine's and your possibly using a smaller turbo? The 4.0 is NOT a high rpm engine..Seems everone has looked at the Nizpro engine and said thats it, thats what I want!! So you want over 1000 fwhp then way you go... If your not upgrading transmission then why bother? Spend the $$ on good tune....

Who me?
I was agreeing with CHEF's comment that most 'tuned length' are just the longest runners they can fit, then I launched into a theoretical question that popped into my head I agree completely with you on your points though. Because the 'tuned length' manifolds look better, or because they've seen Nizpro change the XR6T one for there own design equal length runner design, people want to jump on them, when in reality they could save themselves cash, which, if spent on a better tune like you said, would probably net them more power anyway!

YEah, good benifits on small motors. my mates sr20 responded very well to a hks manifold with big trust td07, they all said it wouldnt spool under 5000, its hits a 3000 due to the manifold
