What are the differences and benefits for internal and external wastegates? Do more people use external wastegates?

More people use external wastegates and from what i have read external is better. I think external can handle more boost, there were a few other reasons but I cant remember them right now. Something about boost spikes I think.

Internal is cheap and easy and suits low power applications. external is better because large valve sizes are available which means they suit higher power setups. downsides of external are they take up more space and cost more.

can you get internal that make that blowoff noise? cause i think external ones are illegal from the EPA cause any atmospheric gases, burnt or not must pass through the cat

thats the blow off valve, not the wastegate.
wastegates vent exhaust gasses, externally venting ones are pretty damn loud and generally reffered to as screamer pipes.

so a blow off lets excess boost vent to keep the turbo spooling and a wastegate vents the zorst around the turbo for when s**t loads of boost isnt needed?

that depends on the turbo. it has a lot to do with the compressor size and the a/r ratios. Also depends on when the turbo is efficient.
