I got an EBII with snort kit on it, head was done last weekend, I have an interesting issue that has arisen. Just drove the car, all was going ok, but as soon as the turbo was about to spool, the car starts coughing and backfiring and carrying on. no boost. Turned the car off, opened the oil cap, the rocker cover was full of what I can only assume was oil smoke, pulled the dipstick, cranked the car, the same smoke pumped out the open oil cap as was pumping out the exhaust. not sure what cylinder or if it was all cylinders but it appeared to be on each stroke. car wil not fire. Oil pressure is off the meter. I am sure I have ruled out vacuum issues by now. I am pretty sure the pcv is working, just not sure where to turn with it at the moment? Suggestions?

Dave

yeah thinking thats gonna be the issue here too. once its cools down I'll pull em out and have a look. the thing its it runs fun at low revs, nice smooth motor.

I am starting to fear you may be correct though.

don't tell me that, I am pretty close to chucking this engine though and throw another in. But if there is a better solution, I'd prefer that.

I would start to look at the ECU. It isn't cheap, but really not that expensive (wasting time) to have an aftermarket efi. As i installed mine, with tuning it was under $2500.

If your motor is f**k then it's prolly because its running on std eec??

Cheers

I don't think there was much iterest in maintenance by the previous owner. overall the car is not bad, engine wise... I think it is rings, head and gaskets have been done, it drives like a bit of a tractor when you try and go, But not having a gauge, I can't do a omp test. But i am sure this would show up what I am thinking. really not much else it could be. Maybe i should throw a stock exhaust manifold on and remove the turbo gear while I build up a more suitable motor.

did u boost it before putting it on the dyno?

how much boost was it running?

it would have detonated and damaged rings/ring lands.

thats what happens when u boost a engine that is untuned.

I was thinking recently that, as you described the smoke coming frrom rocker cover and blowing dipstick out, could have a hole in a piston or 2...or 3.....

Bad luck mate

DID you disconnect breather from throttle body ???
If its still connected you have boosted your crankcase !!
Simply disconnect and seal hole on t body..
Then put an oil seperator in line to air cleaner or induction tube...
Btw the PCV blocks off on boost also!! So there is no chance of crankcase breathing!!
Except through dipstick / oil seals...
Engine is possibly fine ???
