Ive got a Holset H1E to go on my EF Wagon, its got a T4 flange and I want to use the original exhaust manifold and just connected it with a J-pipe with a mid-low mounting position.
Has anyone else got this type of manifold setup or pictures they could share? I though this would be easier than making a log manifold & possibly flow better. Any ideas or comments?? |

It can be done, but it may not be easy to route more pipes through tha area?

i had a standard manifold setup with J pipe ready to be mounted to my ute, until i bought the proper turbo manifold.
i see nothing wrong with the J-pipe, but the benefits from having a proper tuned length manifold are worth it. i read somewhere here (on on fordforums.com.au) that people are running fast 1/4 times on log style, so it still works |

Im definately don't have the skills or equipment to make a tuned length manifold.
Ive got a stick welder & a drop saw & a vice. I thought it would be a bit quicker to make a J-pipe although im still considering making a log manifold. I thought the log wouldn't flow as well they look a bit primitive. I read a bit further on this topic last night, they say the log will improve spool rpm which could help me with this big turbo over the j-pipe. I spose I just need to find an old cylinder head from the wreckers to make one up. |

is it possible to get a t4 flange welded to your manifold somewhere ? the run the wastegate off the standard exhaust outlet ?

Pretty much what chef did on his ED. Check out his home made style exhaust manifold

I believe that would be chefs first manifold. Luke11 is talking about having the j pipe come off of the original outlet i think?

i reckon that looks a bit dodgy doing it like that. im sure it works but the welding looks like a nightmare. i don't trust welding steel to cast iron, i know it can be done but thats not what i want.
i do want a j pipe that connects to the original manifold flange that just does a 180 back up with a flange welded to the top of it. probably in whatever size diameter the header is. i think its 2.25" i was thinking grind back the exhaust manifold flange so its plate & just get a flange that bolts on that is flat and run a metal gasket between them and use some high tensile bolts with big thicker washers to help support the weight of the turbo. i will use another brace from somewhere so the manifold bolts dont have to take the full load. this is a pic of the left manifold of my old twin turbo vh 253. see what i mean, like that but a 180.

welding steel to cast iron isnt a big deal, all you need to do is heat the cast iron up till it gets that red glow to it for 2-3 inches around where you will be welding, and away you go

when i tigged my steampipe outlet to my turbine housing (cast) we just pre heated it, not even to a glow and then welded on the pipe no problems

I don't have an oxy. I only have a stick welder. Thats why I can't do it that way.

i had a look at a manifold i had lying around. i reckon if you got the outlet knocked off flat, you could get a pipe to bolt to it and seal. wastegate attached to the j pipe somewhere ?
