Was studying a pic of a mustang from the states that had its wastegate mounted in the coller pipe...the article along side it mentioned that it was a wastegate and its only wastegate... Has anyone else seen this done, and any pros / cons to doing it?

ive seen a couple drag cars in aus like that, not sure on pros and cons just be better off going with the normal setup in my opinion

Yea the theory is to vent hot air.. It flows quicker being less dence.. Plus why vent air that's already been through intercooler ???
On high boost engines they often run two of them... I had one [Turbosmart] near throttle body and a small [Blitz] before intercooler... Either works.. Main part is it stops compressor wheel spinning backwards or stalling... It also to do with location of maf ...Air should be vented prior to maf...Unmetered air.... Most U.S turbo cars run blow through maf's ....

apparently nizpro used to use an intake blow off valve at lower rpm to help combat surge on big turbos. i am not sure about using it at full boost/rpm though. it would be vey easy to overspeed the turbo. wastegates in the exhaust seem a very simple and efficient system.

It wouldn't really overspeed the turbo when you think about it. less air into the engine means less air in the exhaust which in turn leads to less air hitting the turbine wheel and finally a lower turbo speed. It might sound f**k up at first but it actually does work.

less restriction in the outlet side of the compressor makes it spin harder, and not having any bypass of exhaust gas past the turbine means all gas goes through the turbine, further increasing its speed, essentially forcing all the exhaust energy through the turbine, using its energy to pump more air than required, will cost hp. Yes less intake charge into engine equates to less output. But if your spinning the turbo harder than required your wasting energy, sinple as that.
With a super big turbo on a drag car, the system will work fine, as they typically build boost slow, and often require fancy wastegate systems to hold the gate closed hard enough to make desired boost, removing the gate from these systems would be of benefit, many just weld it shut, or dont run one, with the setup you mentioned the valve on the intake side would just be an overboost valve, as many cars at that level spool progressively as they go down the track. Really the only succesful application IMO of a wastegate on the intake pipe would be a uber high HP massive turbined drag car, even then many have run the superthumpers with no wastegate at all. |

Hang on !!! My comment above was to do with BOV's !!! the wastegate is on the exhaust..
Big drag type engines can use a POV [pop off valve.} Not ideal for street friendly cars though.... Blown NC Do you mean blow off valve ????

i would say he means a bov not a waste gate.
a waste gate is deffinatly an exhaust part. some bov`s do look like waste gates but i cant see any point putting one on the intercooler pipe.

He means wastegate. That is why he is asking the question.
BOV's on intercooler piping are easily explainable. He wants to know why someone would control their boost with a wastegate on the cooler piping. |

Interesting ... so why wont this suit a normal road setup running low/medium boost ??
You just vent the excess air before it reaches the engine instead of after. Wonder if you would still need the BOV then.
