Woke up this morning to give my car (ba 6t) a bit of a going over. It's done 140xxx km now and under 10,000km ago i had a new turbo installed (by a forum sponsor) as the old one was playing up.

This morning I was going to check all the manifold bolts just to make sure they were all good, removed hoses and just went to check the turbo front and it's moving in every direction, up down, side to side and slightly forward and back. I was shocked!!

The car is run on a fully synthetic oil (changed every 7k) running the stock tune for the last 5000km, has an online filter kit (earls) fitted just prior to turbo install and is used as a daily commuter so while it does receive a bit of wot, I am conscious of the fuel bill. So it's not a straight out thrash machine.

I it normal when the turbos are cold? The last experience cost me $2500 and if it the turbo that is playing up, I will not be impressed spending any cash when at maximum it's travelled 10,000km or less than 4 months since replacement.

Any thoughts folks?

any warranty on the item? was it from a wrecker or was it a refirbished item? these things normally have a warranty period, and you will also find most site sponsors are gonna be pretty quick to try and rectify the issue with you compared to burning a customer off.

Has a one year warranty on it ( brand new exchange unit )as long as it had the inline filter kit, which it does.
I don't know if this will extend to labour as well, but in my opinion I will not be impressed if I have to foot the bill of labour costs as well.

As the place is closed on sat-sun I will Have to call on Monday.

Just did the manifold bolts as well as turbo\dump/ cat. Had a couple missing from rear of turbo and a couple of loose manifold bolts. Replaced them and added the norlock washers.

One thing I did notice from the flange of the 6 outlets of the manifold into one had one bolt the same as the back of the turbo. The other 3 ( regular stud and nut) were fine, but I actually found the missing one caught on the front crossmember. Considering the last time they were checked/replaced was by the forum sponsor, I am a bit dissapointed the bolt wasn't replaced with the correct bolt. Something so simple just tells me their intrest in the job wasn't up to scratch.


I will discuss with them on Monday and let you know of outcome.

As a general rule should I have no play cold or hot?

should have very little if any at all.

afaik if its a genuine turbo it should be a ball bearing turbo, so it should have next to no movement, if its a replacement bush bearing turbo then a little play in the shaft when the engine is cold is normal, aslong as the compresser wheel does not touch the housing its not a big problem..

As far as i know, i think(50/50) it is a replacement unit from turbo tech. My old unit was exchanged but I was led to believe it is fully rebuilt to factory specs.

the Gt35-40 is a ball bearing turbo. I couldnt imagine when refurb happens that they would make it a bush bearing turbo instead, or if this is even possible. Im not a full bottle on the subject but it would seem silly to change such a thing?

Just seems strange that there would be movement like this so early on into its life, its not noisy and nothing hits, but its only running the stock tunes so there isnt much boost being made to wear out the turbo.

I will have to just call and let them know on Monday and see what transpires.

For it fitted up, I would hope it's worth that.

Excuse me for saying this since no one else has but why on earth would you pay $2500 for something that costs $1700 - $1900 brand new?
