Hi Guys,
Just a quick question. A mate is putting nitrous on his EF because he wants to try something he hasnt tried before. The NOS instruction manual recommends retarding the timing 2 degrees "from optimal" for safety then a further 2 degrees for every 50hp increase. Now as you know EF timing cant be adjusted without fitting a chip or aftermarket ECU. Assuming he runs premium fuel then how much headroom is there in regards to timing and ultimately how much nitrous he can run without fitting an aftermarket ECU or chip. Im thinking that the factory ford tune isnt pushing the limits of timing so there should be some give without putting an aftermarket ECU in. Could he push an extra 100hp out of it using octane booster and colder plugs? He really, really, really cbf fitting the ECU he has lying around. |

WELL, how much gas does he want to use, and is it a wet or dry shot. Also what is the age of the engine and the condition.
Wet he should be able to run 100 safely, IF he gaps the plugs down to about30thou, and the motor is healthy to start with. If it is a dry system then it gets a bit more complicated, but probably 75hp would be the limit i would run on a stock 6. Any other mods will increase the performance on gas. So head/exhaust/intake mods, then gas, you will feel a noticable difference. I feel that if everything is in tip top shape then it should be OK. Remember, when tuning back off the instant pinging is detected, and go to a smaller HP output from the gas, then enjoy NOS goodness ofr about 1.5 mins at a time Brett

Sorry I should have mentioned that it's a wet kit.
100hp would be enough to keep him entertained but he will run less if he has to to avoid fitting an ECU. The motor is healthy and has paceys and a 2.5 inch exhaust with a tickford snorkel atm. Its auto with a standard torque convertor. He doesnt plan to change the stall speed so it might only receive a small cam in the future. |

ive succesfully ran 110hp multiport wet system on an ef, no dramas... made 117rwkw before the shot and 176rwkw with it

or you could get an MSD DIS4 or CRANE equivelent and use the nitrous retard function to retard the timing when the gas is on. and have the bonus of CDI
