I think can get adjustable rising rate regulators. Vortech FMUs can be had in 6:1, 8:1, 10:1 and 12:1. I run the 12:1... that's with 8 x 19# injectors making 170rwkw @ 7psi... but i also have a chip for the EEC. Sorry, im not heaps keen on recommending one for an I6. 12:1 would be the safest option but you may end up overfuelling... also puts a lot of stress on fuel pump (you shouldnt have to worry about that with walbro) and injectors (fair bit of pressure building up in the rail @ 12:1!!!)

Ahhh, Ok. I have found a 1.7:1 but that may be a wee bit small!!!! (From what ya have been saying) What about and adjustable? Will that do the trick?

No. If you're not doing ECU/injectors then you need a regulator that will really ramp up the fuel pressure as boost comes on.

No idea mate. I suggest you try finding someone who runs an FMU on their I6. Maybe call CAPA and see if they'll give you any hints. And above all, check AFs once its fitted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Narrowband probably wont help you much... they're only accurate around 14.7:1... and by the time you hit 14.7:1 under boost its probably too late already.
Wideband o2 the only real accurate way to do it.... Lol - going forced induction on the cheap is a pain in the a** hey?

Oh Yea! Nah, this guage is pretty good and It gives ya a good indication of when the car is leaning!
I would rather not go cheap and nasty, But I am a Trades assistant on bugger all. By the time I had the money to do this properly, I would be driving around in some sort of electric flying car! No Woooossshhh Woooooosssshhhhh For Me! |

Sorry. I mad a mistake! The regulator I have comming is and Adjustable Rising Rate. It comes with interchangeable springs and is capable of 12:1. Its 1:1 Dependant

so... stupid questions are ok.. good, now i can learn
1) how does the rising rate regulator know when its under boost or not, its just a fuel pressure regulator? 2) I have mums EF which i can experiment on, as i haev just spent a grand fixing it, and my sis only drives it once a week or so, so if it dies in the a***, its not a really big deal, SO is it an idea to experiment here first, then transfer to the au? 3) i have a spare exhaust manifold. an arc welder and an old turbo of a volvo 740. Seeing that realistically, im only playing until i get the $$$ to go for a proper $2500+ kit, should i bother just tinkering with a dodgy top mount cooler (minimising piping etc) and a small turbo, learning what i can before i put out the big $$$ or am i just an idiot for thinking about boosting? 4) How much does boosting ACTUALLY afect everyday driving? 5) How does fuel consumption differ? City/Hway 6) I use my cars to tow boats fairly regularly (at least 1/week summer, 1/2 weeks winter). Will being boosted affect this? will i need to modify anything particularly to be able to? I am looking for massive versatility- from strip to tow... if thats at all possible.... And finally 7) Is it worth it?

7) There's nothing like the feeling of an engine coming onto boost!!
1) A rising rate regulator is similar to your typical fuel pressure regulator. Bascially a diaphram which changes the fuel pressure in the fuel side based on the pressure present on the air side. A typical regulator will increase fuel pressure at the same rate that manifold pressure is rising (i.e. 1:1). An FMU will increase fuel pressure at a much higher ratio. They are adjusted by using different spring rates and diaphram sizes. A simple way to look at it - boost builds in the manifold. This pressure pushed down on the diaphram, effectively cutting off the amount of fuel allowed to enter the return line, therefore increasing the pressure of the fuel in the fuel system before the regulator. 4) Daily driving is only different when you are under boost... i.e. when you get on the loud pedal. 5) Driving grandpa style wont see much difference in fuel economy. But when you put the foot down, fuel is guzzled at a rate you will never see on a naturally aspirated car.
