Ok, I have now been getting right into the whole Forced induction scene! Infact, over the past 2 weeks, I have learnt more about forced induction than I think I ever could!!
Any way, I have read that you can run 9psi of boost without an ECU or fuel system upgrade, but what sort of pressue can you run before you need to do head and piston work? Also, how can you be sure that a turbo is only going to wind out 9psi? Do you need to put a 9psi spring in the wastegate or get and electronic boost controller? Thanks Dudes! Wade |

OMG U NERD!!!!
you stole my post! i was going to ask the same question! whats the max safe boost you can use on a stock engine? ROFL Im exactly the same, before this week, i didnt know how the boosted air got into the manifold :S (DUH!!!)... BUT i am seriously considering starting off doing a backyard job on mums rarely used ef, and if it works ill migrate it to the au... But the idea is to keep it on the cheap for the next few months, so i can get it all sorted on private roads without the hastle of getting it engineered, and no worries if i break something that could potentially be expensive. Ill be making a few posts over the next few days asking some possibly pretty lame questions, but its all a learning curve...

Lame questions are good coz there are alot of blokes around here that really know there stuff!!

boost can be controlled by the wastegat and or a blow off valve
this best of asked in the forced induction threads

So a blow off valve can control boost? Is that with a spring as well?? As in, can you interchange springs to lower the boost?

BOV?
There may be some fancy ones out there that are able to regulate boost but that's not their primary function. Yes - max boost will be controlled by the wastegate or an EBC. Max boost is a tough one to draw the line on. I mean, you could probably run bucketloads of boost on a stock engine if you ran it rich and cut the spark advance... but then, kind of defeats the purpose as you'd loose a lot of power running the tune so conservatively. 9/10 pounds is the general census on boost with stock motors. Above this, the compression ratio of the engine which was designed with N/A in mind will be a headf--k... you'll be forced into running super dooper high octane, rich fuel mixtures and pissweak spark advance. Have a play around with this calculator - it shows the relationship between boost and compression in the motor. http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/compression.htm An engine with static compression of 9.0:1 running 9 psi ends up with about 15.1:1 effective compression. That wont take much to blow a head gasket apart. 9spi seems fairly optimistic for a stock 6 cylinder EEC.... seeings as those MAP systems cant even see 1psi of boost IIRC. I assume you guys would be running rising rate regulators to combat this.

Yea. Just ordered the Walbro 255L/H Pump and the Malsippi Rising rate reg. When the turbo goes on, I will be aiming for about 5psi MAX on stock ECU and injectors only for about a month and then the new Haltech and 500cc Injectors go in. Will it be ok just on that pump and reg at 5 psi?

What ratio can the regulator do?

Bugger the kit! Nah, this one is a chef special. No kit, just buy all the parts individually and go from there! I did see that kit you were lookin at, Frase, and did cosider it but I have allready started on getting the parts.

ah ok fair enough - i've been following your posts around & wadn't sure if you'd decided on a specific kit or not

Errr... that's not actually a true rising rate regulator. For every 1psi increase of pressure in the intake manifold, the regulator will increase fuel pressure in the rail by 1psi. Compared with the vortech FMU that i run, which increases fuel pressure in the rail by 12psi for every 1psi increase in boost....
