Hello all,
Still a bit new to this turbo thing... Do you have both a BOV and a waste gate on a turbo install? or you can just have a waste gate? Also what actually opens the waste gate, is it built into it? (ie when it sees say 9psi it just opens?) The snort kit ones shown here http://www.snortperformance.com/IMGP0097s.jpg appear to have two hose barbs, are these what trigger them? and then what do these hoses hook too? Anyone with a mud map of this would be awesome... :S And a BOV goes after the turbo where the pressure is doesn't it? and does it connect to the waste gate so the gate triggers the BOV? I have absolutely no idea how this works... Any help is grgeatly appreciated... Thanks, Tim

wastegates regulate boost .so say you have a 6psi spring in the wastegate it wont run any lower.
the hose usually goes on the bottom fitting. top one is usually for a electronic boost controller which will use boh of them .if you connect it to the top one it will just keep boosting. bov is to release pressure in ya intake pipe to stop the turbo spinning back the other way which can cuase damage . if will usually go off when the t/b is shut closed .

Still waiting a see a speed log showing the speed fall to zero for that myth to be confirmed/busted. Also as the throttle shuts you get a massive pressure spike come back through the intake piping which loads up the compressor wheel and forces it to stall. What also happens then is that the torque on the compressor side of the shaft is much greater than, and in the opposite direction to the torque applied to the turbine side of the shaft. Over time, shafts snap when subjected to a lifetime of boost spikes. This is why blow off valves are fitted. To keep the turbo in one piece. Warranty comes first, reduced lag between gears is just a side effect. |

On a twin turbo set up one turbo can spin backwards..
When coming off high boost on dyno with out BOV..

I still want to see a turbo speed sensor log because if you measure by eye, there will be certain speeds at which the turbo appears to be spinning backwards but is not. Something to do with the focus rate of the human eye.

The back pressure or doseing they crap on about (VL guys) is the sound of the pressure wave of air flowing backwards past the tips of the turbine blades. The combined speed of the air flowing back past the tips of the blades reaches the level of the sound barrier. Hence converting pressure to sound energy (like the tips of the rotors do on a huey). The vids you see on you tube make it apear the wheel turns backwards but its like watching the tyres on the car next to you at the lights "turn" backwards while they accelerate. I mean really, you think 30,000+ rpm can slow, stop and turn backwards in the second it takes to change gear? or just stall? I am also yet to see proof that doseing has snapped a turbine shaft rather than over speed. Destroy comp wheels maybe, shafts no.

The correct term is a pressure wave (as you have discribed) but I have improperly called it a boost spike because of the pressure front.
And as for the snapped shaft caused by doesing? I'll post up a few pics of the evidence when I have the time. Mind you thins thing had been dosed for 300,000+kms so I dare say it outlasted the manufacturers expectations. |

Nicko nizpro measured it. The data is somewhere. I can't remember where though (maybe calaisturbo.com ). The outcome was interesting. The wheel doesn't stop ever, it just slows down a few thousand rpm I believe. Marginal really.
