hey guys..
after taking the car in its first freeway run since ive fitted the turbo set up.. i noticed with full throttle load under boost ( 10 psi) the car was breaking down/ slightly missfiring.. according to the data log the afr's are between 11.9 and 13.0 depending on rpm, as the rpm rises the afr gradually drops to (11.9).... so this morning i pulled out the spark plugs to find that they are a rusty red colour.. the plug gap was originally set to .8 (15'000kms ago)with the supercharger. but has appeared to opened up to .88-.09 im putting the plug gap change down to plug wear or possably detonation? im thinking the red could be more fuel related?? has anyone seen this before??? Are you using an octane booster?
Red on the plugs is normally associated with a fuel additive, could be an additive in a cheaper fuel as well. |

it had some octane boost about 4 tanks ago, otherwise i always run bp ultimate..

Could be a crack head. pretty hard to tell if it's iron oxide deposit due to the poor quality photo.
Just hope it's just octane booster that's causing it. when you do get that red deposit on the sparks, it does cause misfire because the s**t is conductive.

all 6 plugs are that colour, doesnt loose any coolant or over heat..
driving it last night after cleaning the plugs the miss seems to be gone... |

I point the finger squarely at contaminated fuel.
I've had this before, but from Mobil.

I have seen similar in a n/a engine after picking up some dodgy fuel, but the plugs were not that dark red....

you always get your fuel from the same place when you can manage to do so? is the current tank from a different place that where you usually go?
Not much point approaching the servo even if it is proven to be contaminated, they simply don't care, not really an industry renowned for after sales service.

That's true, but you can take a small sample from your tank & dob them in for having dodgy fuel, and hand over the sample... Servo's can be fined for dodgy fuel. It's almost impossible to get compo for any damage it may do to your car tho.... You can also spread the news by word of mouth.... Just be honest in what you say! Cheers ToranaGuy

yes the current fuel is from the same servo as per normal...

agree with the fuel - try a tank of different fuel.
At 10psi there is a good chance of blowing out the spark (can pretty much guarantee that it is), which will cause your misfires. Misfires will also show up as lean on the WBO2 due to the unburnt oxygen. Id suggest installing a CDI to help with the spark issue. With the dollar the way it is look at a MSD 6A / accel 300+ or mallory hyfire you only need a basic CDI as the ecu does all the rev limiting etc so you dont need these features on the CDI. |

Time for Coilpacks, 8860 and sequential injection/ignition i thinks.

my ea vct turbo runs an xf dizzy with good leads and stock coil, wolf ecu, runs 12psi all day every day and has seen 15psi with this ingition set up , no red plugs for me
sounds like the water in combustion camber, do a comp test and tee ka water head check to see if there is c02 in your cooling system get more info on your plugs at ngk plug chart [google it]http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqread2.asp?mode=nml if its red like a fire engine its water, if its a rusty brown its fuel related thats just my opinion cheers |

after doing some googling,
it appears that the plugs were MMT Fouled {USERNAME} wrote: APPEARANCE: Spark plugs fouled by MMT (Methycyclopentadienyl Maganese Tricarbonyl) have reddish, rusty appearance on the insulator and side electrode. CAUSE: MMT is an anti-knock additive in gasoline used to replace lead. During the combustion process, the MMT leaves a reddish deposit on the insulator and side electrode. so it seems that possably not all high octane fuels are as good as we think.... |

well there you go, u learn something new everyday
the ngk chart only told u what lead deposits look like , i just assumed ,probibly like most that the additive our latest high octane unleaded fuels didn,t leave deposits, well now we know they do !! thanks for the onfo |
