The car does have upgraded pump and injectors (came with the powerdyne kit). It does have a rising rate regulator (one that came with the kit), could the smoke that comes out of the exhaust (sometimes) when its booted be ok considering it has a rising rate regulator ? If the car drives well, passes a compression test: 1. Is it a bad, reasonable, good or excellent buy? -(This will of course depend on everything, but knowing what we do already). 2. Stock ecu, is it ok to use this? Its done a year on it already. -I will happily chase an aftermarket chip, just not straight away 3. Damage; what parts of the engine are damaged by the car being run the way that it is ? 4. If the engine does blow, will any replacement engine in good condition run with the supercharger? Thanks again everyone! Matt Ahhh, that explains the rich. if its got bigger injectors and the rising rate reg it will be running very rich indeed. Rich is better to a point, but not if its washing oil off the bores and fouling plugs. It sounds like a decent buy, and I've seen the car on Ebay, it looks clean. I put it out there that a powerdyne on a 4L, with a decent tune, is never ever going to provide enough boost to kill it. I'd get a chip, run 9psi, gas or petrol, with either a cooler or well setup water injection I got no idea with gas, but these blokes do. Rmyers has got a powerdyne on an EF motor, running LPG, gas research TB. EFFalcon has a turbo EF, again LPG, also gas research TB. Best chip, people have different opinions, I'd lean towards chiptorque or the CAPA Elminator, they are both very similar. The CAPA Eliminator will have more tuners though. Failing that, a unichip would probably do the job. If you do get a tune, ditch the rising rate reg, and just run the bigger injectors. 24lb/h will more then likely do the trick. If you go gas, go straight, forget the petrol side, and just get a chip to fix the timing.

Are you sure there is no chip on it? I would be very suprised if it would run at all on a stock tune/calibration with larger than std injectors (do you know what size?).
Ask if you can check the J3 port on the computer (in the passenger side footwell). If the answer is no, then personally, I would walk away from this one. No idea what sort of dramas you would be buying for yourself... |

I'd also think it would have come with the chip, if the owner has bought the powerdyne kit.

XR8UTE, whats the J3 plug, what does it tell me and how do you check it? The injectors came with the kit are not listed here, but some of the parts are noted at the bottom of this page in "pricelist":
http://www.capa.com.au/powerdyne.htm EL XR8, the listing says and the owner tells me it only needs a chip and an intercooler for "more go" I'll be singing out for a secondhand chip that can be wired in, does anyone know of anyone wanting to sell theirs shortly? Steady ED, do you think removing either the bigger injectors OR the rising rate reg would eliminate it running so rich? Thanks OBS35N!

Yes, either would, but both are a dangerous thing to do not knowing how its tuned.
You really need to get it on a dyno and see where the AFRs are at. As xr8ute and EL XR8 have said, it is more then likely running a chip, if it wasn't, and it had bigger injectors (I'll guess at 24lb/h), it would be running rich ALL the time, black smoke at idle and whatnot.

Hey, good news all, it does come with the chip from the kit, that paired with the bigger injectors and the riding rate reg from the kit, i imagine everything is working as it should.
Is the stock tune very reliable and can it be tuned furthermore for a better ratio, economy, power etc? Also, apart from either driving with a light foot (or not driving at all) how do you decrease the amount of fuel used? Also, reliability will be a massive area of concern, what are some pointers to keep the whole thing running well? Without a mechanical inspection, how can i check the supercharger end of the system for wear, tear and missuse? Thank you all again very much!

One more question, is direct injection needed or can the older mixer syhstem be used, as thats only $2600 as opposed to $3600 before the rebate.
Thanks again!

The stock CAPA tune will be safe, hence why it's probably blowing a bit of smoke when you get up it, as it comes on boost it'll start running pretty rich.
Yes it could be tuned for better everything, the CAPA tunes that come with the kit are an attempt to compromise, it would never have been tuned for THAT specific car. Think of it like the generic tunes they do for BAs, a custom tune is always better. Better tune will bring economy down, like EL XR8 said, his car used the same amount of fuel as my pretty much stock ED XR8 Sprint, he had more weight in the car too. And his runs 8psi of boost LOL If you aren't getting up them, they aren't making boost. If the tunes good, the economy should be as good as stock. Supercharger should be fine, being a powerdyne theres no oil feed or drain... long as its never been overboosted/revved, it should be fine. Not much else you can do to f**k them. Maybe check the compressor blades for damage, in case the noodle has run it without a filter or something silly, but I doubt it.

Hey guys, the car drives great! Seriously, handles really well, (lowered suspension, 18's and camber kits all round). power is fantastic, pulls like nothing else.
BUT Oil was about 5mm below the "OK" line on the dipstick! :O :O :O Big problem? We are doing a compression test tomorrow evening, will this show any damage? (Assuming its only been run low the once?) What sort of compression would you want in a car with 160,000km's? The guys mechanic mate says "anything above 100 (kpa / psi) is ok, LOL Thanks everyone, your advice so far has brought me to buying a supercharged car, a really fast one, that chews fuel! Thanks Matt

Hey guys, bought the car, compression was all around 144-152, so its all good!
The car goes as hard as all hell ! Powerdyne'd to 9psi, custom pipe, wade cam, 2.5inch exhaust with extractors! Got a few suspension things to do, but apart from that it goes well Happy Camper Thanks for all your help Matt

Thanks, seems like a lot of rubbing on one the back tyres on the wheel arch, camber seems like its out on all wheels, might need raising an inch, any suggestions for doing that cheaply, since its already lowered :S
Thanks alot (again)

Yeah no pics yet guys, the car has a camber adjustments on all four wheels, aftermarket
The car goes hard, if my late 98mdl manual EL had 90kw, this thing has double that I hate to admit it, but i cant drive it anywhere near its potential, yet.. lol (im joking, i take "not crashing this car" very seriously) Matt
