Gday everyone, ive searched and read a bit on the topic, but need some more specific advice;
Im looking at buying the following: EL 97 model, 4L, 160,000km's POWERDYNE SUPERCHARGER KIT 2.5 INCH EXHAUST JIM MOCK MOTORSPORT 3000 STALL WADE RACING CAM DBA BRAKES 18"INCH RIMS PEDDERS AND KINGS SUSPENSION PACEMAKER HEADERS Questions: ~Now as it has no chip, it is running a little rich and is blowing a little smoke (im told its running rich, i wont know until i get it mechanically checked or told otherwise). 1. With the car being run with a stock ecu, is there any damage that occurs from having the mixtures wrong (ie too rich)? 2. The stock ecu, i dont believe that can be remapped or tuned alot, but can you get the right mixtures happening with it and what sort of power can be had from the stock ecu? (Guy claims after an ecu and a tune the car will produce 230kw) 3. Insurance; just car insurance has offered me 3rd party fire and theft for $480, online they have not asked whether it is engineered, does anyone know anything about this? ~The guy who owns it said that it being legal (engineered) and insured are two different things, that as long as the insurance company knows about the mod, its insured, despite that if a cop pulls you over you get defected. To save from being pulled over, i wont run an intercooler but use water injection, swap the rims for a set of XR wheels and everything should be fine 4. Economy, switching from a 9psi pully (assuming thats what it is running) to a 6psi one, what sort of economy can i expect whilst taking it easy? Thanks in advance everyone! 1. It isnt good for the motor, but it wont be too bad unless its rediculous. Better to be rich than lean.
2. Maybe the only way of tuning with stock ecu is with the CAPA e series chip. 230kw at the motor is within reason on 6-9psi. A aftermarket ecu is an good option but costly. 3. Give em a call and also try shannons. They will insure it and it wont cost the earth unless you have a bad record. Shannons were cheap for me. They normally do a agreed value and also will take into account when its driven, car club, etc. 4. It depends on the tune and how much time you spend driving it boosted. Under 2500 it will be like driving with the air con on, over and it will cost $$$. If its running rich, it will be dear regardless. If i were you, I'd be getting a quote from shannons and just car so you kno what insurance is worth, than maybe get it on a dyno, to know what its putting out and how rich it is running, may cost $50 but it will save alot in the long term.

for 50 bucks they will let u put it on a dyno then let you take it off ha ha. most dynos charge $150/hr for tuning but remember you get what u pay for and also make sure the tuner knows what he is doing

No, they will hook up a A/f meter to the exhaust outlet, do a couple of power runs and see what the Air/fuel ratio is, If you want to tune it after that (if its bad) most places do dyno tuning from $120 an hour plus. Know what your buying first before trying to fix it.

The fuel economy shouldn't be bad at all, if it has got a reasonable tune.
Mine could be leaned out a heap more than it is, but on a trip back from Canberra the other week. I used 1 litre more, out of a whole tank than my mates ED XR8 Sprint. Plus i had another passenger. So unless you're giving it a hard time, it should be alright on fuel. |

If it has no chip, then I would be more worried about the std ignition advance than a rich mixture.....but why is it rich, is there an FMU on it?
You will need to upgrade the fuel system (i.e. injectors and pump), as well as a custom tune. Economy should be no different between 6psi and 9psi if you are "taking it easy". A little hard to "take it easy" with a 3000rpm stall converter though |

The guy tells me the supercharger has been on the car for one year (with no chip, so running a little rich).
He tells me it only blows a little smoke sometimes whilst sticking the foot down. 1. Whats an FMU? 2. The injectors and pump, will problems occur if the injectors and pump are not upgraded? 3. Lpg, bad thing for this car? 4. The stall, is it difficult to remove and are they worth anything secondhand? Thanks alot mate, very helpful! Matt

Running the supercharger without a chip and stock fuel system won't make it run rich, it will make it rean lean as soon as it gets on boost.
I would get a comp test on it, and even then I'd be real wary of buying it, because it's a fair bet if hes been hammering it around the motor is either already f**k, or close to f**k. FMU is a "fuel management unit", tricky wording for a rising rate fuel regulator usually. A proper "FMU" is one that you can adjust the slope of the ratio on. A stock reg references fuel pressure off vacuum/boost at a ratio of 1:1. 1psi of boost in the manifold, it increases fuel pressure by 1psi to compensate. For a car like that you'd probably hope it had something like an 8:1 reg on it at least, and hopefully an upgraded fuel pump to keep the pressure up.

The car does have upgraded pump and injectors (came with the powerdyne kit). It does have a rising rate regulator (one that came with the kit), could the smoke that comes out of the exhaust (sometimes) when its booted be ok considering it has a rising rate regulator ? If the car drives well, passes a compression test: 1. Is it a bad, reasonable, good or excellent buy? -(This will of course depend on everything, but knowing what we do already). 2. Stock ecu, is it ok to use this? Its done a year on it already. -I will happily chase an aftermarket chip, just not straight away 3. Damage; what parts of the engine are damaged by the car being run the way that it is ? 4. If the engine does blow, will any replacement engine in good condition run with the supercharger? something with lower compression is always better with boosted engines but depends on what boost level u wanna run. if u want to lower compression the right way to do it is with dishtop pistons

compression is stock so i am told, so would 6psi be ok?
If a 9psi pulley has been used, would any damage result, given the timing advance etc (assuming it hasnt been retarded) ? Much power difference between 6 and 9 psi, i imagine there would be ! Thanks alot, again Matt

6 psi would be fine on stock compression but not much more without a chip. running rich is better than running lean. i have the same problem with my forester atm, the new Unichip needs to be installed lol and im being impatient. makes 176kw untuned but when fuel is tuned it will make over 205awkw

Great, so with a chip 9psi is ok!
1. What if it is running a 9psi pulley? Damage? 2. What sort of maintenance will be required (for everything under the bonnet) for: i. 6psi pulley, no chip, petrol ii. 9psi pulley, chip, petrol iii. 9psi pulley, chip, lpg 3. Lpg, bad idea? Plz all the reasons you can think of! 4. Best value chip for the job, something that will allow for maintenance free operation? 5. A good tune, whats it going to cost me? -Max power not required, i'd be happy with 200-220kw knowing it was a safe and reliable tune. Many, many thanks again, you guys are great! Might i add, this is an exception to the pety crap going on in other forums where ppl complain about the quality of the users, a credit to all of you for your help! Matt

ive just bought a unichip Q+. this is the new turbo unichip. im getting ti installed and with 3 custom tunes for 1700 but this is on a forester that has a plug and play module so i dont know how much it is for a custom wired one.....
email APS if you wanna find out about the unichip and if it can be made to suit
