Hi guys,

Just getting getting everything sorted for my turbo kit. I just wanted to know if anyone has been able to fit a screamer pipe with a butterfly flap of some sort on it.

So that way when you want to keep it quite you can do so?

I am thinking about something along the lines of the varex exhaust system. It doesnt have to be electronic and it can be manaul also

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

You won't be able to put a butterfly flap on a screamer pipe. It's designed so that when u achieve your set boost pressure it will dump waste exhaust gasses through the wastegate to prevent your turbo from overboosting and ruining your engine.

Only way to make it quiet is to plumb it back into your dump pipe/exhaust. Which is also the legal way to do it.

The wastegate and outlet or screamer pipe is just a bypass for exhaust gases.

Cheers,
Corbin

ive got mine plumbed into the bottom of the dump pipe, but i have a removable flanged section so i can remove a 3" long section from the screamer pipe and fit a blank flange plate over the flange on the dump pipe..

the only set back is i have to jack the car up and remove the pipe every time i want to run the screamer... which will be only when i take it to the drags...

Nice...... Keeping it legal for the road and make it growl on the track..... I like :)

Yeah I think I might have to go with something like that. That way you get the best of both worlds

Also you were saying something about a varex muffler system?

Just to pre warn you don't restrict the exhaust on a turbo set up as it can kill turbos, ie. Ruin the oil seals, if u do get a varex system, make sure u have the butterfly wide open whilst raping/thrashing it ;)

Btw what car is this on? What set up do you have?

Cheers,
Corbin

I was just using the varex exhaust system as a example and thinking of installing a similar butterfly system in the screamer pipe. But wasnt sure if it would work or not.
The set up will be getting installed into a BA XT on straight gas.
I will be purchasing the snort perfomance stage 3 kit.

Sure you could run a butterfly, setup would be the same as a bimodal exhaust (VE and FG falcons for example)
Run a plumb back as standard, when you open the butterfly it uses the screamer pipe.

So you mean splitting the pipe into 2 and plumbing one into the dump pipe and letting the other go to atmosphere with a butterfly valve?.

It wouldn't really matter cause before the turbo reaches full boost it won't flow anything through the screamer pipe...... Not until it reaches the set pressure, this is what the wastegate is for, it acts as a valve.

Not unless you mean for it to be electronically controlled like a varex in which case it could work but I don't think you'd be able to get anything off the shelf...

Cheers,
Corbin

for something like that to work you will 2 butterflies,
1 to open the wastegate pipe to atmosphere and the other to seal off where the waste gate pipe goes into the dump pipe..

Yeah and I imagine you wouldn't be able to seal Each path off completely with a butterfly valve

I reckon your idea would be the go. Atleast you use flanges and gaskets to make sure it's sealed.

Corbin

You could run something like this on the end of your screamer pipe. Run the flanged bit to the exhaust.

Image

Then put this on the end of the open pipe to open and close it when you want it loud and quiet.

Its a lot of effort though. If you want it quiet dont hit full boost.

Thanks for all the info guys. I really appreicate it. Its just an idea I have been toying with at the moment.

I will discuss it with Geoff in more detail when ordering my turbo kit. He will be able to set me in the right direction.

Itd be as sealed as a throttlebody would be when closed - its just a butterfly inside some round pipe...

And Dan, images are forbidden

Doh.

It was a pic of 1 piece of tube that seperate into 2 like Y piece.

The other pic was an electronic butterfly valve sitting inside a flange to suit.
