so this whould get me out of trouble in the intrim. Picking up a motor tomorrow, to pull it down and do it properly.

ECU Limp Home Mode happens to manuals too. It's to protect the engine as well. My car has similar symptoms ATM... massive flat spot @ 1800rpm or so, running rich and down on power. I think I know why...

Hey again - Novice guy here throwing in his two cents worth... When the hose to the map went on mine I just got huge amounts of smoke and a fluctuating combination of missing and super low idling. No sign of backfiring... Although, the closest my car has come to forced induction is when the cat "Turbo" climbs in the boot to investigate new smells. |

Yeah mate there is a huge amount of variables to consider. My car back fired & missed all due to the over fueling. But the crack in mine would open up close up so it used to be all over the place.
I just thought i make a suggestion as its an easy thing to check and he could of been lucky and only had a small issue like that. Cool name for your cat Dc todd, get your self a timing light. You have a turbo car now and are obviously going to be doing your own work to it so this tool could be invaluable. As ive played around with timing a s**t load to get it right. And remember to put it into diagnostic mode. You may find that the Aux shaft has jumped a tooth when you had no tension on the timing chain whilst doing the head change so has throw you ignition timing out? Not likely but worth a check.

yeah goota invest in some more tool or get them back off my father in law... I'm not gonna gother with this motor too much.. plenty of patrol in the oil already and its barley been driven. I think I know where my issues start. where they end who knows,

hey dave, I'm in the process of installing a snort kit as well - never again with this kit, there's a reason why you don't get instructions!! - and i'm having the same problem. over 2200 rpm as it starts to boost up it backfires and f@rt about, but wont boost up, waste gate opens, etc. Its a fuel problem. i installed a fuel pressure gauge and when it comes up on boost the fuel pressure won't rise even with the rising rate reg. the fuel reg, the turbo and the entire kit is all made in china. I clamped the return line of the fuel reg to maually rase the fuel pressure temporarily, and it went well. be careful when ur engine runs lean like this as the turbo heat goes thru the roof. tried to contact geoff about getting a new reg, left three messages and no response. spoke to ppl like nizpro, and ragoli performance, they said to fit an aftermarket computer on it as rising rate regs are a poor fix to a turbo/scharged motor.

go via a snort rep.
snort are always hard to contact direct. as for the reg being a cheap fix... yes they are. everyone knows an aftermarket ECU is much better but most people are doing it on a budget. rising rate reg's DO work, its been proven with multiple cars running 200+rwkw with stock ECU and a rising rate reg. the snort hardware is upto the task, when installed properly it works well.

dave, i took the rising rate reg off and just ran it with the factory reg- ran heaps better, the idle everything. i took it for a light run up to 3000 rpm and it seemed to have fixed the backfire/on boost problem. don't run it over 3 grand as it will run very lean, i only did this to fault find. see how u go. Eff falcon, i rang the mobile # on the snort website, he sounded like a young bloke, and he didn,t really know a lot about setting things up, maybe he just sells them ??
when i spoke to some of the reputable turbo specialists around they all said to stay clear of rising rate regs, basically the term "use at ur own risk". was the norm. good luck

Do you guys have a afr guage on the car? there a good investment (and cheap) and will tell you if your running lean.

You have the rising rate regulator installed the wrong way around. Leave the factory reg in place put the outlet from the bottom of the factory reg to the very bottom port on the rising rate reg. Put the port from the side of the rising rate reg to the tank return line. Obviously give it a vac line reference on the top too.
Someone else hinted at this earlier in the thread too. I've made the same mistake and quickly found the problem. You can buy a DIY turbo kit, that doesn't necessarily mean you CAN install it yourself. |
