Hey guys I am new to the world of all things blown, I have an EB that had a snort sg2 kit fitted by the previous owner, I recently did the head, or rather some top mates recently did the head gasket, now I am having issues that feel vacuum related, I need to make sure i have the plumbing correct but no instructions mean I cannot check against anything.
So.. does anyone have a set of instructions they would like to share? OR... does anyone live in the sutherland cronulla area and feel like dropping in to double check the work? see if you can sort out the issue.. Cheers Dave

ok whats happening is, car will cruise, as soon as i try an accelerate, it starts coughing and backfiring under any sort of load. I have a feeling I have plumbed it up wrong.. but it was doing the same just before the gasket finally let go. Dima thinks fueling issue or maybe ecu into limp home mode, but its manual. Car will not sppol up as that requires engine load. so scratching my head as to what is out of place. I am sure its all hooked up right but at the same time I am sure I have overlooked something. Maybe some info on exact things to be checked would be more helpful to try and diagnose it?

what kinda engine management and fuel system are you running?could it be a timing issue?

what does your setup consist of ,are you running aftermarket ecu ? whats ypur fuel setup .
id start at the basics fist ,leads, plugs, dizzy ,then check for vac leaks .even with cooler piping leaking and exhaust leaks it should still run underload

new plugs and leads, dizzy was checked been checking over it for vac leaks and can't find any, thats why I am now looking sidways to something else like the plumbing. Kit is a snort stg 2 with log exh manifold.

Backfiring under load sounds fuel related. May be lean on initial application of throttle. Also could be timing related or both. Check fuel pressures(should be a rising rate reg) then confirm timing, if a head gasket was done, was the timing right before the gasket popped, and has it been set right since the repair or was the cam gear and chain just cabletied into place to stop it moving.
What EFI are your running and is it adjustable. Also what boost Brett

the plumbing wouldnt make it run like s**t ,it just wont boost .have you skipped a tooth with the timing chain when you put the head back on ,

def no tooth was skipped during replacement, timing has not been adjusted, but lack of timing light does not allow me to check it either, as for fuel reg, I know its larger but unsure whats on there, I am assuming its a rising rate reg as it is the one supplied with the kit. I think the filter could be shot to s**t, had a similar issue withthe el, filter fixed it. just running in the driveway at home before, taking it up to 4 grand back it off and stab the throttle, it still created a crackle of backfire, but not anywhere near as bad as yesterday doing the same thing.I'll try resetting the ecu.. it started to spool loading it up on the handbrake today, I will not have a chance to take it for a run till tomorrow arvo/night but.. so i will not know if its any better, I have just been out and pulled all the vac lines and replugged them in again and it behaved a bit better, pcv valve seems ok, at idle I cold hear it fluttering a bit though, could probably do with replacing, but is definatly moderating vacuum..
suggestions?

I’d put my money on it been a fuelling problem, and if your not carefully it will blow the head gasket on you again.
Did you disconnect the fuel lines from the rising rate reg when the head was done? if so they may of been put back on the wrong way. Is it running the standard fuel pump? I had a standard pump on mine for a while then it started playing up, it would fuel the car fine off boost, but just could supply under the higher pressure. Also... on the EF's (not sure about the rest) they have a plastic connector between the fuel pump and fuel pump housing, mine used to split open, and under higher fuel pressure would just squirt fuel back into the tank. If I was you I would try to get hold of a wide band O2 sensor and see what’s happening with the fuel ratio when its playing up. Or throw it on a dyno somewhere an get them to check it. $50 on a dyno is going to be cheaper then another head gasket. |

Colder plugs gapped at .030 till sorted..

Could you maybe have cracked the pipe on the map sensor? Ive had one go and it sounds kind of familiar the symptoms you suggest. They run all over the place when there getting fluctuating signals to the map.
