ok i sit here day after day reading your posts on turboing iv'e a vey basic understanding of what your talking about. but just a few q's:
If i have a strong rebuilt 4.0L, std heads, xr spec cam say putting out around 110rwkw, what is the smallest and cheapest turbo i could use. I am only wanting to get in the range of around 160+rwkw. What would be the highest psi i could run at without putting to much stress on the engine (6-7psi?). I dont really want to push the revs to high either would like to stay below say 4500-4900rpm. Would i still have to go with an aftermarket ECU or would something like a power chip be suitable, would the standard injectors need to be upgraded to larger ones. Would a standard T3 turbo off something like a R32 skyline be okay or would that be too small. If this goes ahead i will only be using a small cooler aswell. Thanks youv'e probably heard it all before but like i said i only have a basic understanding.

what compression are u running?
6psi would be a good mark to start with and will provide good boost in power

For that power output have you considered supercharging? $5,351 total cost if you fit it yourself (not hard).

it is std comp at the mo'. What should i drop the comp down to? Yeah I looked at supercharing, but it seems harder to source second hand charger parts than turbo parts. I want to do this the cheapest i can, i already have a standard cooler which is off a skyline, so thats a start i paid $60 for it unsure weather there is any leaks or not, i can also get a t3 flange for next to nothing and also a newish t3 turbo (approx 8,000) for $200. I just want to do it on the cheap, seeing as it's gonna be my first turbo'd ride. It's just gonna be a learning curve for me.
Any other tips.....

ah ok well back to square one, what size turbo would i be looking for, i've found a GT 45 style turbo but would this be too big for what i am aiming to achive
Turbo Specifications Nomenclature (tag ID) T4 GT45 Y2004KInlet (exducer/hot side) T-4 Flange 70.1mm x 82.55mm (2.76†x3.25â€) Outlet (exducer/hot side) 4.25†V-Band Inlet (compressor/cold side) Ø 109mm (4.25â€) Outlet (compressor/cold side) Ø 86mm (3.38â€) Exducer A/R 1.05 Compressor A/R0.66 Bearing Type Ball Bearing Cooling/Lubrication Oil/Oil Oil Supply Fitting Flange Oil Return Fitting Flange Compressor major diameter Ø 98 mm That turbo in the above picture is roughly 300mmx250mm so would i be better off going with something around twice the size, what about a top mount

Front mount are more efficient, and some can be found on ebay. Its better off to go for a slighter larger turbo, you never know what you might want to do for psi down the track

jump on the ebay bandwagon and sometimes you will find factory XR6T or Typhoon coolers, im sure they would be suitable for low boost such as 6PSI. Usually go for pretty cheap to

the skyline turbo, is it off an RB20 or RB25????
if its from an RB20 you're in luck as i have one i'm looking to sell. two turbos of that size would work quite well. run them both at stock wastegate pressure and you should see around 7ish PSI. manifolds would be easy to 3 cyls into each turbo. if you really wanted to do it very cheap and don't want to spend much, you could use 2 of the intercoolers, one for each turbo then join the 2 pipes after them. it's not ideal and will never make huge power but it would work. i could prolly sell you the my turbo and a second cooler for $220 i've got plenty of s**t here... If you wanted to i could sell you two RB20 turbos and a cheap front mount thats 600x300x76 or 600x300x100 |
