tjb45: did you have an intercooler or anything similar on your car?
i'll be pulling air from the inner guard, and be running an intercooler. i know this is FAR from the optimal setup.
I'll be running LPG as stated in the original post so fueling and higher octane isn't so much an issue.
I know Rmyers car ran fine with the stock timing maps, and the only difference is supercharger vs turbo.
and yes i know a turbo will produce a hotter intake temp but i had to find out :)

I was running a large front mount intercooler, but I had the pod filter sitting where the battery usually goes, so it would of been sucking in some hot air from the engine bay. If it was me, I would put it all on and see what happens. The detonation was that bad on my car it was very easy to hear and I simply backed off when it started to occur. My knock sensor might not of been working correctly, therefore not retarding it enough..

fair enough, just how hard would u push the car before it started to detenate? could u get away with tame driving or was it *that* bad??? i do plan to get the ignition side of it controlled anyway, but i'd like to get the car running first.
I've got pretty much 100% of the turbo gear all ready to go.
Simply don't trust my engine from its past.

once a conservative timing map was setup using what ever means, what changes would be required in the future to handle future mods?
would it be much or very little?

Mine's still running EEC for timing and wolf for fuel ( in the process of doing wolf ignition... )

Im using a 600 300 75 intercooler, 5in cold air intake, custom air box with pod inside and inlet pipe and intercooler pipes thermo tape wrapped. Its getting fairly low inlet temps, usually around 5 deg below ambient which is pretty good. I did have the timing retarded a few deg with the previous tune, and from what I could hear, there was no detonation on 10psi, 200odd wkws. 14 psi was pretty good to, though I could hear a slight ping occasionally, maybe making 230wkws.

So use a big cooler and effient inlet system and 10 psi will be fine... just expect to have more lag than a fully programable ignition system... it'll still be good for high 12s though

Should be able to cruise it around lightly without any problems at all. Keep it off boost. It's very rare an engine will ping under light loads.

thats good to know.
I've got the same size cooler, plan on having a decent CAI.
also only after 7-8psi.

lets hope for the best :P

The car was fine to drive around, it was only at WOT that I was experiencing the detonation.. If your running straight gas, it should cool the intake temps more then what petrol would. Also since it is only straight gas you should be able to get away with just an ignition computer (should be a bit cheaper) I’m still looking for a better coil pack setup, if you find anything I would love to know…

Broken rockers?? Whats the go there? Just pull the pvc out, place in the wheelie bin and mount a fitting there to plumb out some more air... the rear vent isnt big enough to vent

This has been a topic before, but chef how do you have your PCV valve and rear breather setup. Currently I've got my PCV setup standard back to the manifold, and the rear breather running down to a catch can, and then from the can to the intake side of the turbo to provide some suction.
I blocked off the PCV valve once and found that the car started blowing a heap of smoke??

I dont have a pcv... I run both lines into a T piece then ito the can, out of that into the air inlet between filter and turbo. I just blocked off the pipe from pcv to manifold

Ok, I was going to try that next but it seems to be working ok ATM. Does it ever get smoky when you are just cruising around not on boost or sitting at the light for a while??

No, no smoke... its worth doing, you dont need the pcv anyway and the motor really does need the extra ventilation, low boost you'll get away with it, but I slip mine upto 16psi occasionally and it used to blow oil out the dipstick on that boost, all good now

Ummm funny, that is exactly what I do, every now and then up the boost to 16psi, but get a bit of oil coming up the dip stick, tis a good enough incentive to change over to your way..
