hey are there many of you out there with supercharged 4L motors out there. im just wanting to what different type of kits there are and how well do they perform. how much boost, do you need any ECU uprgrades, decreased compression or drivetrain strengthening?? are intercoolers necessary, bovs etc?

By far the best options are the powerdyne and vortech kits supplied by CAPA. Check em out at www.capa.com.au



Powerdyne - 6-8psi. Vortech - 8+ (go as high as the engine can handle)



Hell yes. CAPA provide a chip with their kits and a rising rate fuel pressure regulator but for 10+psi you'd wanna go aftermarket ECU + big injectors.



Depends how much boost you run. 10+psi and you'd want to look at decomp or else you're looking at 110 octane or sweet FA timing advance..



Intercooler depends on boost you run, water injection can prolong the need for an IC. BOVs are a must, CAPA kits come with them.

Considered a turbo? Probably better power for a similar outlay on the inline 6. Nothing wrong with a supercharger tho.

I've got a supercharged 4 litre. I'm running straight gas research so i didn't really need an ecu upgrade (i will be putting one in shortly tho so i can adjust my timing maps). Because it is LPG i didn't bother decomping the engine given the higher octane levels that gas had over petrol (in fact i did the oppisite and raised compression .

As for drivetrain, it really depends on how much power your running. Is yours auto or manual?? If it's an auto, i'd strongly suggest you got a bigger transmission cooler and a shift kit to prolong the life of the auto (my auto lasted all of 3weeks ).

Chef is running a turbo - power is exponential / tapered in (more-so) - superchargers are obviously belt driven and power comes on straight away - more potential for damage to autos AFAIK.

There are a few guys running around with turbo auto 6 bangers.

The centrifugal superchargers like the Powerdynes and Vortechs are linear power with full boost only coming in at high rpm. Turbos boost up far earlier therefore are harder on the drivetrain. But either way, unless the auto is on its way out or you severely overheat it by not running a cooler and giving it a hard time, it should easily cope with 250-300rwkw

It's a powerdyne with a 9psi pulley making a lazy 188.6rwkw atm, but you will see that number bump up a bit when i get a few things sorted out.
Tranny died simply because i was trashing the F#%K out of it and was on it's way out anyway:P

Was having belt slipping issues for a while, which I now believe to be related to worn tensioners. Also, it is still using stock EF timing maps, which is why i have a haltech waiting to get fitted. I got a cooler installed aswell as water injection as a preventative measure due to the high compression i'm running and the fact that the timing cannot be manualy adjusted (it's running extra extra safe ) Once the haltech is in, i will be hooking up the water injection to only activate if there are signs of pinging, which should free up some room in the combustion chamber when not being used. I will be looking into a better flowing cooler aswell as i believe the current one is restricting power more than it is benefiting it, so hopefully that will also bump up the kw's a tad.

I only had here running with the blower for about 3 weeks, so i never really got a chance to play around with different setups to see what worked and what didn't. The auto was already showing signs of slipping, so i got a tranny cooler to try to prolong her life a little. It then started getting worse, so i then installed an electronic shift kit, but alas, she ran for 2 days after that before i blew the torque convertor ...

Oh well, I was giving it a VERY hard time so it was expected.



Heh, should mention that i blew my old tranny (4speed auto, no tranny cooler )within 3 weeks, the $5000 being spent ATM has not made it into the car yet

I have a 3.7 lsd ef diff that has only just been put in, and am currently in the process of getting money together to get a T5z from malwood. Should hopefully be in the car in about a month or 2.

it managed 133rwkw before the blower went on.
The car deffinately has some more in it, and it felt real strong just before the auto went.

Rmyers THRASHED the auto.. it was only a matter of time till it died, you try forcing the auto to kickdown to 4500-5000rpm and copping a mouthful of boost.
