Yeah the different pulley you can get for the Supercharged Vt's make them move a little better, but they aren't anything special at all running their 8-9 PSI from the factory.
The fuel economy will differ in the XR8, depending on whether you have an Auto or a Manual. I could get 800km out of a tank of juice in my manual XR8, when stock on the highway. 500-550km with mixed driving.
Still got 300-400kms out of mixed driving with the blower, and 500-600km's out of highway driving.
If you get a blower, your mate in the VR SS wont have a hope in hell of keeping up.
I never had any drama's with mine, and that was on a stock motor, but only 5 PSI, but as Kilma said, he's running 11-12 PSI with no problems.
So if u do around 300-400km of mixed driving a week, i'd allow a full tank of petrol ($80-$90)

Good fun though!

a mate of mine has a supercharged VT calais with 10psi pulley, cat back exhaust and 2nd cai and it makes 160rwkw...
depends if u like the look of them or not, i would prefer the XR, imo it looks better and has that V8 noise :D

Drive the two back to back (becuase it really is the only way to go) and I'm pretty confident that you will walk away wanting the XR (in EL trim). They are a much nicer car to drive, more solid, more refined and steering and handling that's streets ahead of the dangerous Commodores.

Have you though about going the XR6 route and turboing it? Would probably end up being cheaper, if money is concern to you???

Besides an EF/EL XR is going to have way more street cred against your mates SS than a VT Calais ever will. :D

definatly dont write off the supercharged v6's guys. they are weapons when tweaked right.

fastest one atm over east just run 12.06 or something. and that will cost you under 10k extra to get.

in factory form, not that great, will pull a mid 15. (6psi factory IIRC) however, get extractors, exhaust, rockers and 10psi probably cost you about 2k, or just over and you should be running 14.5's

fuel economy wise.. pretty good. mates cv6 monaro puts out 240rwhp with exhaust, 10psi and rockers and can still get 500km out of a tank not babying it.

if you dont mind driving a holden they can be a pretty good choice, the engines are pretty strong.

I've got a mate with a supercharged VT. It's the GAY. Drinks fuel.
And gets raped by stock manual XR6's even when the XR6 takes off in 2nd, and fries 1 wheel then the clutch badly off the line.
That night was a pisser! In stock form Supercharged VTs are crap.
Modified Supercharged Vt's would really drink the fuel.
Get a Manual XR6, put a set of extractors, 2.5" redback and an RPD Rspec stg3 cam in it. Then go race your mate with the SS...

i remember the blower on the VT's were only adding about 16kw to the motors output. Me thinks that holden put them on just for eco. But who cares. The V6's arn't too great, Gen IV was good.

the s/c motors are actually pretty good, and this came from a mechanic of 40+ years.....

the bottom ends are very tough and the heads flow well, the superchatger itself is very efficient.

there are people pulling some really impressive numbers....

if i was you id go get a s/c v6 take off the charger, refit stock manifold and bolt on some turbo/s....

or...

linkage {DESCRIPTION}

My mate has a superchared VT Calais...it does 12.8's all day long...the engine is standard besides roller rockers & cam....other mods are Highstall, 3.7 (or 3.9..cant remember) diff gears, LSD, extractors & exhaust, intercooler, smaller pulley for more boost (10 or 12 psi)...and hes got some mickey thompson street slicks coz he had traction problems...all up hes spent 3 or 4 grand i think on mods....not bad for a 6 banger

All these people bagging the blownV6. Blowers are not about, oh i have 155rwkw, they are all about the low and midrange torque. Gaurentee a blown V6 commie with 160rwkw would SLAUGHTER and EF/L with 160rwkw. absolutly SLAUGHTER it.

Oh will be a much smoother power delivery as well. Way better low down response, towing power and overtaking than an N/A 4.0.
