base timing: timing position set with timing light, during computer self test mode which fixes timing while you adjust the dizzy position... you set base timing and the ecu will adjust timing up or down from this point during normal operation

normal base timing: base timing is usaully set at 10deg btdc... the ecu then takes control and can advance it to wherever it is programmed to.

my suggestion is to put the ecu into self test mode, and instead of making the base figure 10 deg, make it 0deg... therefore, your timing will always be 10deg less than what it should be

Start at 2* btdc....Its the mid / peak torque - rpm range that needs to be retarded. But you can't do that with std eec without edit etc....So you have to start with *8 less at start up... Some lock timing at say?? 18* but can be a b**ch to start...
