need to put the car in self test mode, then retard the dizzy.
no idea how much you'd need.

bridge the two left hand (top and bottom) pins in the test port located near the fuse panel under the dash.

id set it probably 0deg base since im not sure of the max timing figure compared to the base figure, id guess they would run upto about 25deg adv in standard form, and you wouldnt want more than 15deg advance in it without a tune, therefore, instead of setting the timing at 10deg base, you set it at 0deg base.... the el only has 1 timing mark right?? that mark is 10deg adv im sure, so set it to about 1cm to the right of that mark...

the car will be crappy off boost, but you have to put up with that when you try to retain a non-tuned ecu......

There are instructions for setting the timing here - http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33978

As for how much timing to pull, how much boost are you running? The general tuning instructions I have used to set base timing maps in the past suggest pulling 2 degrees from the maximum advance per lb of boost to a maximum of 1/2 to total advance (this would be a very safe tune). In reality, how much you can get away with will depend on lots of factors. Running rich and cool with low boost and you might not have to touch it.

I would pull as much timing as practical and creeping it forward until your happy. If you ever hear so much as a tick from the engine pull it back a couple of degrees and leave it.

so when you move the dizzy one way it advances it and when you move it the other it retards it ? and then you look at the timing mark on the and it will show you where the timing is depending on the way or you the dizzy is that right ??

Yes, turning dizzy clock wise will retard it.
anti-clockwise advances.

Turn dissy same rotation as rotor button to retard....I'd fit the XR6 fuel reg or fit an adjustable one...

start at 10 as per my post above, put it this way, you are better off starting too retarded then starting with to much advance
