Hi All,

Can anyone tell me how to tell if I have a TKO 500/600 or a normal T5 manual?

The reason I ask - on purchasing my AU XR6 several years ago I was told by both the owner and then a mechanic that this wasn't a normal 5-speed and that it 'would never break'. The mechanic owned a 5-speed AU XR8 ute and said my gearbox was different to his. I didn't know anything about falcons or boxes at the time so didn't pay a lot of attention.

The other reason I ask - everyone talks about how sloppy and weak the T5's are, but to me the shifts have always felt tight and solid, and I haven't had any problems with the box despite having the supercharger fitted at 2000kms and the car now having 175000kms. Maybe I don't drive it hard enough! Makes around 300rwhp, I can shift hard into 3rd and hold it flat, and from what I've read many T5's fail with this sort of driving at much lower power levels....

Thanks for your help.

Joe

Doubt its a tko. Surely the last owner would know what gearbox was put into the car,Especially when it costs thousands of dollars to buy/fit a tko..

Thanks for the pic Troy.

I had a look under the car and indeed its a T5 as per Michael's comment. Not sure why the owner/mechanic thought it was something different.

I had wondered if maybe the TKO made it into the T-series v8's and somehow slipped into an XR6. A long shot I know, but thought it worth checking out as I'm selling! I'm surprised then at how well the T5 has gone in this car.

Cheers, Joe.

As Troy said it will be a t5z. There a tad bit stronger but still not all that great. Some t5's just seem to last abit longer then others. With 300bhp it should hold up for a while

Must be. I looked up some T5 pics and they all seem a little bit different with where casting ribs are positioned etc. It's had 250 to 300rwhp it's whole life so doesn't seem a problem at this level. I probably don't drive the car as hard as some on this forum! Thanks for the info.

Joe

Can you get the numbers off the casing and ID tag ?

if you cant probably the easiest way to tell if you have a T5z over a T5 when the box is in the car is to test the first gear ratio, jack the rear, spin the engine by hand in first gear count the rotations of the tail shaft.

2.95 for the t5z.
3.23 for the t5
or i think early ea ones are 3.55 ???

also t5 is 10 spline input t5z is 23.
