I have sold my turbo and am now thinking about going TT. The manifold will be cylinders 1-2-3 into 1 and cylinders 456 into 1. Obviously this will not be a staged setup, so my question is how important is it that the turbos are the same? It would be cheaper if i could get two similar turbos instead of two of the same but will this be detrimental somehow? I'm thinking that if they are too different then the cylinders will have different filling/scavenging characteristics causing tuning problems.
I wont be running a lot of boost just looking for an efficient system with early response |

i don't think so. i'm pretty sure in one of the toyota supras they have two diffetrent turbos so one sppools up first.

yer but that is a staged system, sharing a manifold with a valve in between |

Unless you realy know how to set up manifold you'll run into surge issues it may blow back through the weaker turbo..

even if they are two different manifolds not sharing gas flow? also the turbos wont vary much, they will both be off engines 1.8L-2L |

Beat me to it. If it were staged it wouldn't matter, but the way you want to do it you'll need the same turbos. |

i think he's refering to the turbo compressor outlets, saying if one boosts better than the other, and the other cant cope, you will get air wanting to surge back through the inlet of the weaker one

Its best to use identicle turbos as you'll run into all sorts of tuning/setting up issues... one may come boost earlier, one may cause more gas restriction through the head... there's so many variables between turbos that it'll just be a waste of time.
Why did you decide TT? Is it a $$ thing or just for bragging rights?? |

Why did you decide TT? Is it a $$ thing or just for bragging rights?? well most people consider a big single to be the best path for big power so its not a bragging thing. Im just in the market to get another turbo as i sold the old one. Dad who is fabricating the manifold would prefer to make up two smaller manifolds than a big equal length one and im not even considering log style manifolds at this stage. $$ wise you can often pick up smaller turbos off 1.8L engines cheap because they arent and upgrade for anyone where if you go bigger suddenly the price jumps heaps. I will just have to be patient and buy two of the same typre of turbos. probably two off a forrester as these are cheap, reliable and fairly readily available. Also two small turbos will fit under a modified heat sheild where as a bigger turbo on equal length manifold wont. I want a totally factory look even though it will be engineered. All pipes black ect. |

One thing to think about when buying used turbos is there 's a big chance they or it will need a rebuild. A rebuild for most turbos is a similar cost, so one big turbo rebuilt will be cheaper than 2 rebuilt turbos.

I realise this but thanks anyway, whats involved in re-building a turbo? approx cost? |
