G'day
What would you make a custom turbo header out of. I've read an article on the net, www.toyotaperformance.com/turbo_header.htm Does anyone know what this stuff is and where to get it? Cheers

Did you read the article?
Quote from the article, "This header was constructed from 1 1/4 schedule 40 NSP weld els and tubing. The els are available from most industrial plumbing and gas fitting shops and are very inexpensive." Any steel supplier sells this stuff. Its also known as black steam pipe. |

Thanks guys
The reason i asked was because the author of the article is in the U.S. Black steam pipe is available anywhere but i didn't know that this was the same stuff as 40nsp. Do you think that it would be possible to make a header using this stuff to match up to a TO4 for my crossflow? I looked up the blackwoods website looking for steam pipe. I'm assuming that PIPE STEEL EXTRA HEAVY DUTY BLACK - P/E is what i am after. Is this the pipe i'm after? Cheers

Havent got the turbo yet, i'm weighing up the options at the moment.
The only problem now is how to bend the pipe. I dont have access to a pipe bender. Can i bend the pipe by heating it up and bending it in the vice. Cheers

You buy the mandrel bends pre made, then weld them together

Where do i get them from?
What do i ask for? I dont want to walk in and look like a d**khead. Also, can this stuff be welded with a mig welder or must it be done with a tig? Cheers

Ask for steam pipe bends... you gotta figure out what diameter and what angles you need.
I get my piping from Liverpool Exhaust in Sydney, no idea about melb but just call a few exhaust places and ask them. Its thick walled pipe so welding is easy, even with an arc welder, so MIG will cool |

Thanks for that.
What size tube would you recommend? I'm pretty sure it will be a TO4 but it may end up being 2 smaller ones. I suppose it would be easier to make a manifold for 2 turbos cause theres only 3 pipes to each turbo. This turbo stuff can be quiet daunting when you first look at it. Cheers

Its even more daunting when you have all the parts gathered around you and are trying to figure out how to get it all on hehe
Use the same diameter as the exhaust ports, dont go smaller but dont go too much bigger as it will slow down the air speed and slow your spool time. Stick with a single, it might seem easier to make the manifold but all the other pipes are hard and theres 2 of everything. Making the 2 into 1 pipes for the cooler and dumps can be very hard, so keep it simple. One big turbo looks heaps better than two little things struggling away. You might wanna think about buying a manifold made up, theres a guy on ebay sells them for around 500. Sure its cheaper to make your own, but its so much easier to have that part of the turbo job done for you. I rooted around with my manifold for ages to get it to work, when really I should have bought a pre made one, but lives and learns I spose. What turboes have you looked at? |

G'day
Ive looked at TO4's and TO3's, i dont know alot about turbos as yet but most of the xf setups i've seen run TO4's. Ive looked at a t28 aswell but i dont have enough experience to tell the difference. I think i'm gona buy a manifold made up cause its gona be alot of rooting around and i'm not that good with a welder atm. From what i've learn't so far the exhaust manifold is the hardest bit. If i go with a TO4, there everywhere. Intake pipings not hard to get and is pretty cheap, the dump pipe and exhaust will be made by a mates dad, intercoolers are everywhere, blow off valves are everywhere. The problem is while they are everywhere which one suits my application. The other problem/expensive bit is the ecu. I'm gona have to run wolf 2d or better. How much is the wolf ecu? Cheers

Wolf,EMS ,Haltech are around $2500 fitted...
EMS Stinger is $950 plus fitting.Microtech is another brand... I'v used one size bigger from flange a reducer from 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 to get good transition then smaller pipes to allow good responce..By turning each bend and spot welding them aventually everything will line up.You'll need to cut twice what you think when making the collectors.Bolt flange to some RSJ or similar to prevent warping...Make sure flange is right way around before welding.. A T3 T4 hybrid maybe a good option..T3's are just big enough so anything smaller is chokeing engine...
