hi guys,just fitted brand new garrett gt35/82r & was told inlet oil pressure to turbo charger should be around 40/50 psi max.i am currently running 75 psi oil pressure at idle,think may have hurt seals in turbo,or is it just venting oil past seal because pressures to high?
there is small amount of oil on compressor cover,omly travelled afew kms.iss my pressure to high to turbo?any ideas on how to drop oil pressure would be appreciated. |

Does the feed port have a restrictor built in, or does your fitting have it. I have a 3082, and have no oil probs......
How accurate is you oil press' gauge. My brand new motor has about 40psi when hot. I dont think you can drop the pressure, other than fitting a huge hose. Cheers Daz

Ive got 80psi hot at idle and 90psi+ cold in the morning but im not 100% sure i have the right sender for the autometer guage...

thanks for the info i put an external oil press gauge on end of turbo high press oil line and thats what i got 75 psi hot at idle only worried because of oil mist on intake of turbo and old turbo had same oil feed with no oil on intake

hay guys just to verify i have checked just about everything i can the fully built engine ( forges ,rods, stud kit ,o ringed ,head work ect ) ran fine with s**t old t04e and crappy log manifold with same oil feed set up no oil anywhere on 9 psi made 210 rwkw for about 10.000 kms the only thing i can think off is old turbo was journal type and new is roller bearing which from what garrett say needs only 45psi oil press max i have been told to fit a 1mm restrictor to turbo oil feed hope it does the job yes i do have a catch can and sump is not over press cheers kev

GCG sell oil restrictors where oil pressure is too high and floods the seals...
http://gcg.com.au/turbo/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=139 BUT before you go this way ... CHECK that the oil return is not restricted in any way... It should run atleast 150mm virtical before any angle towards horizontal... The oil return hose/ pipe should be atleast 15mm inside dia... Yes journal bearings require more oil flow..

hey mate thanks for the info i could not find turbo oil restrictors
i got some info of nizpro and there oil restrictor trick is to braise weld the oil fitting so its fully sealed then drill a 1.5mm hole through the middle bam and the oil pressure is gone ha ha ha i road tested car and oil mist on compressor inlet cover had nearly gone it wll take a drive or two for oil to disapate i will care fully monitor this and yes oil return runs as striaght as possible to sump with a16mm metal pipe on turbo in to 18mm braided line to sump with only minor turns i fully trust what nizpo had to say they have had massive excerience with these sort of proplems car runs good now the hot weathers gone first road test of new set up was couple of weeks ago in 35 deg heat with no cooler [ rwc issues ] only got 8.5psi actuator in it and its tuned for 12psi cant wait to boost up new set up weeee |

im just wondering if you changed your oil pump when you did your motor? if so what brand? i have the opposite problem at idle i only have 15psi oil pressure at idle when hot. i have had 3 oil pumps in it all jp, the latest is a hi volume, but pressure is still low. i have even had the crank re-machined to get tighter clearences, still no good. i am looking at trying a factory pump next.

I'd say either your sender is shot to s**t or your pump choice is wrong. My engineer recommended I go with an external adjustable multi stage oil pump for my turbo build. Yes it is more expensive and more complex than what the factory has on offer but the thought of dialling in the right amount of oil pressure for both the engine and turbo (as well as crank case scavenge vacuum) is too good to be true, especially when chasing serious power.

Funny, thats the same set up i am running for the big motor. What was the cost of the external pump. I am interested as mine cost a fair wad of cash but will be worth it

We haven't talked turkey yet. Just running ideas past each other at this stage. So far I have just the inlet and a stockpile of heads and cams to play with.
The oil pump he runs in his ski boat is a 5 stage pump and dry sump but he reckons I could get by with a 3 stage pump and still run a wet sump. |

A vacuum pump to scavenge crankcase helps with turbo seals etc...As in WRX motors..
Oil cooling squarters under pistons helps cool pistons and also feed oil to gudgeon pin which can suffer oil lube if scavenge vacuum is too high..
