Hey all.
Sorting out a turbo setup, on a budget. EL XR6 Aimed at street driving and for about 350rwhp. Not too much to the point of blowing up the weak T5. I got a ems 8860 already, so tuning should be fine. Dont want any lag, so im goin to try lowish boost with about 8-10 psi but with a twist, high comp. Like 9.7:1. I know the old school guys tryed and tested, but went back to low comp dus to they were chasing stupid power but they found it to be wiked for killing lag. But head flows 380hp But i reccon it wil work for what im chasing??? Using a T04, ext wg, largish intercooler, ed intake mani, 40psi ish(still to be decided) injectors with ajst fuel reg and pump., 3inch dump, low mounted exhaust mani ( im goin to put a heat shroud over turb, cop factor, wont see it) Any other ideas?? Remember, im not after a huge power, just reliable, street tough power.

I'm keen to see results on high'ish compression.
I'd say it's doable, but would probably be more reliable on a strong bottom end. Forged pistons/molly rings, etc. Turbo is sitting somewhere in the distant future for my wagon once I run out of NA options.

from my small amount of knowledge i would say that would a good reliable cruiser. i intend to turbo a ef or el sometime in the future and i will be using a t3 or t4, ed inlet manifold, magna blue injectors etc
anyway i was told that lowering compression is needed if you want the massive power figures, but for a nice street cruiser it is better to keep standard compression so it sill has some go when off boost |

but i think the comp shoud be fine for the power im chasing.
anything after that, would be a different story

I think it would work well, but you would just have to be careful with timing - and get a pretty damned good intercooler.
BTW, there's a T04 and Manifold on ebay at the moment for like $700 (auction ends pretty soon I think). |

the exhaust a/r should ideally be between .84 and 1.2 or there abouts for a 4 litre ford i have been told and that was only .7
there are a heap of t 4s on there that would be suitable but starting prices are about 700 or 800 but they are new |

something i found
TURBONETICS' TO4B and the TO4E series are the most versatile turbochargers available to the performance aftermarket. Available in wide range of compressor housing selection - the TO4B/TO4E family can support power levels from 250 HP to 650 HP for single turbo applications and over 1000 HP for twin turbo applications on engines from 100 CID to 500 CID. All TURBONETICS' TO4B/TO4E turbochargers are available with carbon or dynamic seal and wet or dry bearing housings (specify when ordering). Standard configuration includes the popular "on-center" turbine housings - a full line of optional tangential-style housings are also available. TO4B/TO4E turbochargers are also available with TURBONETICS' exclusive "Tuff-Turbo" option and the equally exclusive (patent pending) TURBONETICS' CERAMIC BALL-BEARING option

A big 4L 6 is not going to have any lag if you choose the correct turbo. Personally I would select a GT35/40 with a 1.06 AR and you will have max boost at very low revs, with the potential of mega HP when the driveline can cope with it (we're talking a 700hp turbo).
Your no doubt going to want to chase more hp once you have setup the 'mild' 350hp streeter you describe, so just bite the bullet and pull the engine. Freshen up the bottom end with some low comp pistons, around 8.0-8.5 is ideal. You dont need forgies (everyone will tell you that its mandatory, but its not... plus you will have to listen to slapping pistons everytime you start your cold engine). Blueprint, balance, shotpeen the rods bla bla bla. EB/D intake manifold is a good selection, however it would be wiser to have the runners laser cut a few inches from the ports and a custom plennum (about 10L) welded up, with a nice sized TB. Cooler, injectors bla bla you know what you need there. How big is your budget? less than 8k will see the above happen... Do it once, do it right... Thats just my opinion, and thats how its being built in my toy when the time comes...

I would love to but its the money factor, i cant afford to do that.
Also once you get over 400hpish you start having diff/box probs and there is another expence. It would be f**k awsome tho!!! But as you say, i know i will prob want more when i get it. But you have to stop somewhere, and a house/business is on the card for me soon.

Yeah, ARs of 1.00 are really the minimum for a 4lt
Around $1000 will get you a decent used garrett of this size, but dont fall for the dodgy stuff that lurks around ebay... they look good and bargain priced, but made from rubish materials ect Are you DIY the whole set up? |
