Hi all. Im stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment. On one hand I can bolt a turbo onto the ED for a conservative 6k but on the other hand I can buy a 5lt conversion (less gearbox) for 3.5k. The 5lt is brand new (yes you read right) and is ef xr8 spec (185 kw I think). What should I do. It appears the turbo conversion will give more bang for my buck but the v8 option is so attractive (just love the sound more than anything). Please can someone give me some no s**t, unbiased opinions on the pros and cons of both (especially those that have had dramas with either conversion).

the EF spec V8's are all 165kw
personally i dont see theres much of a decision to be made...... V8's all the way! ps....... hairdryers are for women

V8's all the way! ps....... hairdryers are for women Glad to see no sarcasm in that remark Dollar for dollar the I6 turbo would be a better mod, but that is as far as I will say about I6, V8 to get the same performance will cost you s**t more considering you would be fitting a stock EF/EL V8, EF XR8 has only got 170KW (5kw caused by better exhaust, but I could never feel a noticable difference between a GL V8 etc and XR8). But to see a real good idea check out EBXR8380's car, not only does it sound good, there is probably not to many members cars performing like it. Click here to see it

Personally id say go the turbo I6, you will get a lot more bang for your $, BUT insurance is likely to be higher, unless you can get one of the AU 220KW motors, (about 5 G's -new) then go the V8,

I'd go the V8. I've finally seen the light after the recent V8 conversion.
The amount of aftermarket parts out there are amazing.

Personally I'd go for the V8 and then compress the air going into that.....but i must confess my opinions are extremely biased. As brad mentioned - extremely deep market for parts for the Windsor, you'll NEVER run out of new bits to put on there. They are built like brick s**t - the engine will literally outlast the rest of the car.
Dollar for dollar, kw for kw, the turbo 6 would come out on top tho. Try and do a lot of it yourself and save a few $$$ and have a ball doing it. But then... one has to question reliability issues with these engines... more so if its going to be forced induction.

$6k on a Turbo I6 - that wont even cover a good ECU.
Dont let peak RWKW figures blurr your vision. The drivability and low/midrange power of the V8's is just amazing... even on the breathless 165kw 5.0's

My mate has an EL XR8 manual with 150 rwkw. I have a basic turbo 6 EB auto running 10 psi on a standard engine. He can keep up until 60km then I am gone. But his car does sound better
My setup was about 8K all up though using a GT3540, 578cc injectors, wolf3d V4 etc. |

10 psi on standard engine? OK, going off topic now... but how many KMs have you done since the huffer went on?
BTW that must blow well past 150rwkw - 200?

Sounds about right. But if your mate with his XR8 spent the same money on his V8, good luck catching him

Im still $10,000 ahead on the total cost of both cars. We can talk about ifs all day but that wasnt the question. I can build a new engine for $4000 that will let me run 30psi but I havent. It pulled 186rwkw running really rich at the last dyno day. The A/F was down below 10:1, its getting a new cam and retune in the next few weeks. I have done about 4000kms so far since last october with the turbo on. My compression is still perfect. I tested it last weekend. |

Going by redbook, ED V8 GLi is only worth $900 more on the second hand market.

Yeah we all know how well going by those work, remember how much you got for your POS Kingswood, Redbook would have probably said you would have to pay someone to take it. (Well at least that would be pretty close to the mark in this forum)

Hehe. Yes, well I'm not a fan of redbook either. But re previous comments about being $10k ahead, $14000 and $3500 are market (private) prices for the quoted cars
