I am looking into going single turbo on my engine that i am building at the moment, i am just after some rough turbos that would flow enough air/ spool up reasonably quickly on a 400m V8 engine. i have been looking at the garrett t4, but there seems to be soo many varies of it!

Thats a long motor aye 400metres and all. I guess you meant to say 400 Cu( Cubic inches.

I'd seriously recommend checking out some of the US-based forums. AFAIK there aint too many 400cui turbo engines kicking around Australia.

Maybe try www.turbomustangs.com or www.corral.net

A pair of T4s would be good... all depends on your final goal though.
befor you choose a turbo(s) you must first decide on a final power output and at what rpm and boost presure you want to use.
Once you know this just ring around the turbo shops for some good deals

well the engine alone will be pumping out some decent rwkw, i have been looking at twin turbo setups, as there is a lot of information about twin turbo mustangs etc, but at the end of the day im after just a mild boost pressure of under 10 psi, and from what i have been reading i think say a garrett t4 or something sitting on the passenger side with both banks feeding the turbo would be able to spool pretty quickly as its a big engine, and would be able to produce 10psi pretty comfortably. also i feel that a single turbo setup would be much more practicle in the way of piping.
the way i see it as working would be to start off using the standard exhaust manifolds, swap them over so they face the front of the car, id run a pipe from the drivers side under the fan belt area joining up to the passenger side manifold and sitting the turbo where the overflow bottle would normally be on an XE falcon, and have the dump pipe sitting on top of the passenger side manifold and running down under the firewall etc

anymore suggestions and ideas would be awesome!

yeah the "m" blocks are basically a cleveland block but they have a 1 inch taller deck hight therefore making it a tad wider, but they share all cleveland componants such as oil pumps, dizzys, heads, fuel pumps etc.

also i feel that a single turbo at the end of the day will turn out cheaper and be something different. as for plumbing suggestions, anything is more then welcome as i will under taking this project in the next 12 months.
this year im hoping to get my 400 fully finished, and my car sprayed and smicked up for the nats then next year concentrate on the turbo side. uni is killing me cash wise so it will take this long to do i estimate!

have been looking around on methods to building the exhaust system for the single turbo setup and i feel that using the standard headers would be ideal for now as they will provide a solid starting place. but i would be interested to hear other peoples views.

A well sorted designed logf style will still make enough power or put it this way it won't be whats restricting your power goals...So long as the the primeries enter the log atleast a 45* angle..Simple tight not the same clearance issues as long tube turbo headers..

ive been looking at the t76 as it has been used quite a bit in the states on stangs etc, but i am having trouble sourcing information on these turbochargers. chef, where would you reccomend for me to look around for turbos, i dont think the ACT is any good as its quite small and i feel slightly over priced, ps i love the turbo setup on the EA!
also what compression ratio would you guys reccomend, with 351 heads on this engine i will have around 9.5:1 and ive been told if i use copper head gaskets i will get 8.5:1

I got mine at GCG turbos here in sydney, but I did alot of looking around for different styles and deals befor I went there.
One turbo I was considering is the Master Power T70, but I couldnt find enough info to make a solid decision, but Ive read alot about them in the states and for the money they are a very good turbo... garrett cartridge, with master power cast comp housings, very big unit for the money (1100 if I recall right)

would you guys recon a t4 turbo would be sufficiant to boost a big engine? and CHEF, do u have any info at all on that Master Power T70 turbo? im starting to get real confused as there is just soo much to choose from now. i doubt it i will be boosting much over 10 psi and id want it to spool reasonable quickly aswell.
