as per title, turbo timers? does anyone use them now days??
im considering fitting one, as sometimes i might give the car a bit of a hard time on my way home, and when i say give it a hard time, its more or less just 12 psi 1st and 2nd gear bursts, not hardcore race style driving lol, as i still got stay within or around the speed limits.. so its kind of anoying sitting waiting for a minute or so to try ensure the turbo is cool enough to shut it down. a few years back i had one on a cordia turbo because it was an oil cooled only turbo.,. and i know alot of modern turbos are oil and water cooled and probably dont need a cool down period as much as an older oil cooled design.. considering mine is an older style oil cooled garrett t04 should i bother?? |

i vaguely remember reading something about them being a bit of a grey area legally and insurance companies not liking them. mainly because they require bypassing any immobiliser... but you've got an, ahem, 'not stock' ECU anyway so you are already in that grey area i guess
 if it were me i'd just idle it down, i do it anyway even with the water cooled core if i've given it some stick. i just listen to the rest of whatever song is playing while i grab my smokes and phone and s**t off the passenger seat.

My timer turns off occaisionally, and i have not let the car idle for as long as i like, usually 30 seconds. Non H2O core should be cooled down as the oil can coke inside the housing, and consequently reducing the life of the turbo.....
As for the immobiliser issue, i would doubt anyone could bypass it in the time it takes to count down. Pretty hard to drive a car that is running, and has the steering locked...... I need a new turbo timer anyway. I think i will get another pencil one off ebay.....or make one from a jaycar kit...... Cheers Daz

Most of the remote start car alarms have a turbo timer - you shouldn't need remote start, but you can hook up IGN power and a tacho line.
There's a few IGN power positions in the fusebox to add a fuse and a line to the alarm. Tacho can come from the diag connector. You won't compromise an immobiliser, since it comes into play on startup. Plus you can improve the car's security. Most of the two way Hong Kong/Chinese ones can be had off Ebay for $80-$100. Don't turn your nose up at them, as quality and reliability have improved considerably over the years.

I don't bother, normally the last couple of minutes of my trip are in residential streets so i just take it easy.

timers are used for letting the engine idle & circulate fluids (oil or coolent) to the turbo for a little while so the system can cool a bit.
They really came about because in the early days people brought turbo cars & thrashed them. apon shutting the car down, the hot exhaust would allow oil to seap past the seals & occasionally start the odd engine fire. unless the housing is glowing red, its not super important.

I had one in my ef didn't need to bypass smartlock, but you cant use the remote locking while the car is running. I had to use the key to lock my car while it was still running. Gave me the s**t after awhile basically makes your remote useless.

yep same as above i use the built in wolf3d one but u cant use the remote .

Maybe when your closer to home you can just take a gentle drive around the block once and then turn it off, yh im pretty hard on my car so i just sit there in the garage for 2mins idling.

Ditto for the slow last 5 mins driving before you shut down. Doing this stops the oil boiling and ruining your hair dryer. The turbo mini I had(still have the 1000cc turbo engine waiting in the shed) never missed a beat after 200 000km and no turbo timer(did the box instead - what a mess!!). I looked at one; however, decided not to go ahead with it as there were(still are in the ACT I think)laws regarding leaving your car running without anyone in it. The RTA n the ACT are turds when it comes to inspections.
IMHO, timers are a bling factor so save your cash for the petrol hike over the Xmas break. We all know it is coming
