G'day, guys.
I own a '97 EL Falcon GLi I6 wagon, with original running gear and 389,000 on the clock. The engine has what I have been told is perfect compression of 170psi and it is very healthy. It gets a full service every 10,000km and is very well looked after and always has been. It has been running on 98 unleaded for about a year, which has made a big difference to the driveability of the car. I am a uni student and funds are pretty tight. Basically, I am wondering, is this car worth turbocharging? If so, what kind of cost am I looking at for a 5psi (at most, for now) setup. Also, what pros and cons are associated with such an upgrade? Will I need an engine decompression? Will I need to upgrade any part of my drivetrain, ECU or exhaust. I don't want to embark on this project to hoon around, it is purely for the challenge and hopefully it will satisfy my curiosity toward forced induction setups somewhat. Thanks in advance, guys. I am very excited to hear what you all have to say.

my 2c worth.
if your not doing it to go fast . dont bother . the amount your going to waste, trying things, breaking s**t, doing things 3 times cause you tried to save money. spend the money on something that is already done . or buy a BA XR6 turbo. theres plenty of info on here about it all.use the search function. you will need a ecu upgrade.motor wont need decomping. if its only 5 psi tho . ive been thru 4 setup changes and spent prob 30k on this car .

I agree, if funds are tight and your not doing it to go fast then don't bother..
because to do it right it wont be cheap, do it cheap and it wont be right,,,lol by just throwing a turbo on it without ecu, fuel system upgrades and tuning it wont last long.. if done right the std engine can take a fair amount of boost before decompression is needed, I ran 15psi and at times up to 18psi on a std au engine for 4 years with no issues.. and costs were up around the 10g mark.. |

Thanks for sharing your experience, mate. Say I was to invest in the future and turbo my Falcon, what kind of boost is required to achieve, say 300HP at the wheels (I would guess about a 120HP increase). Please excuse me if this is a naive question. I am doing my best to learn! Thanks again, mate.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Troy. It's very much appreciated. I know I am asking a question that can't be answered without knowing every single detail about my car and what kind of turbo gear I will be running. But, if I was to run my car at say 7-10psi boost, what kind of power gains could I expect and what would I have to do to unleash as much power as possible at that boost level? Thanks, Troy.

Save your pennies and buy a BA/bf xr6t
Newer model, more mods etc and off the shelf parts Or get a diahatsu charade and put a hayabusa turbo motor in it

anywhere from 7 -12 psi will get you 300 hp depending on what setup you have .

But maybe one day I will be able to get my hands on a BA! With a strong emphasis on the "One day." Haha Thanks, Mendy!

Just out of curiosity, guys. Why are you "Getting Sideways" and "Tyre Shredder" and I am an "Oompa Loompa?"
I noticed this just above your profile pictures on your posts. Does that have anything to do with the amount of posts you have made?

Yeah running a intercooler is best .
Cold air intake doesn't really exsist.for the turbo . Your best off boxing the filter in . And trying to get some cold air to it

And trying to get some cold air to it Okay, so an intercooler is handy and should I upgrade the stock panel filter to a pod filter? Or are they not what they're cracked up to be? I have heard that choice of air filter can make a noticable difference in engine performance. Is that true? Also, by "boxing the filter in," are you suggesting I use the stock filter box and simple chuck in a new type of filter, altering piping if necessary to make it work? So the CAI is just a myth? Is it basically just a term for the correct placement of the intake? Thanks for answering my stupid questions! It is very much appreciated. Also, just in a short list, what have you done to your EL Ghia to give it 293rwkw? That's just shy of 400hp. That is massive. How much of a difference do you feel when you get out of a stock EL and into yours and vice versa? Thanks again, mate!

by boxed in i had my filter like this ,
